Mauricio Ochmann was bussing tables in California in the late nineties while waiting for an audition that wouldn't cast him as a mute gang member. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1977, but grew up in Celaya after being adopted right after birth by a couple who split up shortly afterward. Those formative years at Joanne Baron's studio in Santa Monica taught him that the camera can smell fakery from miles away.

His first appearance on the big screen was a near-cameo in Message in a Bottle in 1999, sharing the set with Kevin Costner. It was a brief flicker in the footage, though enough to get him into the actors' union and convince him that the craft allowed no half measures.

And he decided to return to the south.

In Mexico, television absorbed him without mercy. Shows such as Azul tequila in 1998 and Como en el cine in 2001 gave him grueling filming hours and valuable experience in front of millions of viewers. That industrial production pace would burn out anyone, but he held his ground under the spotlight for more than a decade, churning out melodramas on networks such as TV Azteca and Telemundo.

The Stand Against Narco Money

The big media buzz came when he agreed to play the criminal Chema Venegas in the series El Señor de los Cielos during 2013. His portrayal of the character captivated audiences so much that it earned him his own spin-off, El Chema, in 2016.

Any other actor would have stretched the character until retirement to secure million-dollar paychecks.

Ochmann did just the opposite. In 2018, he decided to turn down the role of a lifetime because he refused to keep glamorizing drug trafficking in front of a young audience that kept asking him for autographs on the street. That voluntary walkout left the executives at the American network stunned, but it preserved his own ethical integrity.

Because the movies were already calling him.

In 2017, he headlined the comedy Hazlo como hombre, a satire about macho prejudice directed by Nicolás López. The film was a box office hit in Mexico, earning over 200 million pesos in just four weeks. With that figure on the table, his standing with production companies changed completely.

Box Office Success and the Spanish Bridge

Starting in 2018, his name became associated with popular comedy, with projects such as Ya veremos and ¡Qué despadre! in 2022. But rather than settling for an easy formula built for quick consumption, the actor sought to break into the market on the other side of the Atlantic.

His arrival in Spain began with the thriller Sin ti no puedo in 2022, a project shot in Madrid alongside Maite Perroni in which he explored much darker psychological profiles.

A year later, he made the leap to co-production with Amigos hasta la muerte in 2023. In this feature film shot in Galicia alongside Marta Hazas and Javier Veiga, Ochmann not only took on a leading role that earned him the Best Actor award at the Alicante Film Festival, but also risked his own money as an executive producer.

In 2024, he balanced comedy in Hotel Bitcoin with the thriller Non Negotiable for digital platforms. Then came Un mal partido in 2026, directed by Salvador Espinosa. Filming wrapped in Amanalco on a tight five-week schedule and an independent production budget planned down to the last detail.
