Aitana Sánchez-Gijón was born in Rome in 1968 due to her father's exile. She grew up in an intellectual environment where art was a tool for survival rather than a mere ornament. She made her television debut at just sixteen in the series Segunda enseñanza, directed by Pedro Masó in 1986. That first foray in front of the cameras shaped a work ethic that she still keeps decades later.
Spanish cinema found in her a classic face that was hard to typecast.
In 1989, she starred in Bajarse al moro under the direction of Fernando Colomo. That urban comedy put her on the map for a generation that wanted naturalness and truth. And although mass audiences demanded more, she preferred to alternate the spotlight with the risks of independent productions. For Aitana, prestige never depended on the size of the billing.
Hollywood came knocking in 1995 to star in A Walk in the Clouds opposite Keanu Reeves. It was a twenty-million-dollar production that aimed to conquer the global market with a romantic aesthetic. But the actress chose to return to Spain after the premiere, because the California studio system felt foreign to her and was too rigid for her temperament.
In 1998, she took over as president of the Academy of Film Arts and Sciences of Spain. She was the first woman to hold the post and led the institution until 2000 amid a climate of intense political tension. That period of public service did not slow her creative work in the theater, where she began to build her true authority as an actress.
Not every project performed equally well at the box office in the late nineties.
For much of the 2010s, she focused her energy on the stage. She worked closely with Mario Vargas Llosa in productions such as La Chunga and reached an impressive technical maturity with her Medea in 2015. Theater allowed her to explore dark territory that commercial cinema of the era did not dare offer her.
So when Pedro Almodóvar called her for Parallel Mothers in 2021, the actress already had an unquestionable technical command. Her role as Teresa earned her first Goya nomination for Best Supporting Actress after nearly forty years in the profession. It was a recognition that came naturally after years of turning down the easier road to fame.
The industry once again looked to her ability to carry the weight of a complex story.
In 2023, she starred in Que nadie duerma, a film adaptation of Juan José Millás's novel. In the film, she played a woman who loses her job and decides to make a living driving a taxi through the streets of Madrid. The movie was shot on a tight budget and a six-week shooting schedule.
In 2024, she took part in producing the series The Mother for a global streaming distributor. Filming took place mainly in locations across the Community of Madrid with a crew of eighty professionals on staff.
