James Cameron drove trucks in California while dreaming of worlds that did not exist.
He had no formal film training but devoured technical manuals in the USC library. In 1978 he shot a ten-minute short titled Xenogenesis thanks to a loan from a consortium of dentists. It was his first real contact with the technology he would go on to master decades later.
And the gamble paid off.
The idea for The Terminator struck him in Rome during a high fever. He imagined a metal torso dragging itself out of an explosion, armed with kitchen knives. He sold the script for one dollar (a symbolic sum) in exchange for being allowed to direct the film. In 1984 the budget was six million dollars, and the pressure was suffocating for a first-time director.
Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted the hero role, but Cameron convinced him to play the machine. The result was a box office hit that defined modern action cinema. But Cameron didn't stop there. In 1986 he took the reins of Aliens and turned the space horror of the first film into a full-scale war of colonial marines.
Because his vision didn't fit in a traditional studio.
In 1991 he once again broke new technical ground with Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The use of computer-generated liquid metal was a risky bet that cost 100 million dollars. It was the most expensive film in history at the time and earned five times its cost in just a few months.
In 1997, Hollywood's press predicted an unprecedented financial disaster. Titanic had gone past its 200 million dollar budget, and filming off the coast of Mexico was pure chaos. The director installed a red light on the set that signaled when he could not be interrupted under any circumstances.
The film grossed more than 2,000 million dollars worldwide. It won 11 Academy Awards, and Cameron shouted that he was king of the world from the awards podium. It was the moment his perfectionism stopped being seen as a flaw and became his trademark.
He doesn't negotiate schedules or resources.
He spent more than a decade without releasing a narrative feature. During that time he descended alone to the Mariana Trench in a submersible he designed himself. In 2009 he presented Avatar and changed the way audiences understood 3D and motion capture. The necessary technology did not exist when he started writing the script, so he had to invent it.
Many doubted the relevance of the franchise after so many years of silence. In 2022 he proved the audience was still there with Avatar: The Way of Water. The sequel grossed more than 2,300 million dollars at the box office and validated his long-term production model.
In 2025, the third installment of the franchise is set to premiere, shot simultaneously with the previous one. The estimated cost of the Pandora sequels exceeds 1,000 million dollars in total investment.
