In 1997, Paul Verhoeven was looking for a face that blended a cheerleader's freshness with the coolness of a space soldier. Denise Richards showed up on the set of Starship Troopers with a perfect smile and a contract that would pull her out of obscurity in fashion catalogs. That satirical sci-fi movie served as an immediate springboard.
But the real uproar came a year later. In 1998, the release of Wild Things (Wild Things) permanently transformed her public image. The pool scene with Neve Campbell was etched into the memory of a generation, and the industry decided Richards was the new femme fatale of the turn of the millennium.
The stakes went up when she accepted the role of Dr. Christmas Jones in The World Is Not Enough (1999). Playing a nuclear weapons expert in short shorts earned her a salary of two million dollars. It also brought her some of the harshest reviews of her career.
The specialized press didn't forgive her lack of scientific credibility.
In 1999, she won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress for her role in the James Bond franchise. This negative recognition didn't slow her early work pace, but it began to define a career where looks counted for more than the script. Richards tried to break out of typecasting with the comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous that same year. In that film, she showed a sharp comedic sense for parody.
The 2000s were marked by tabloid noise and her marriage to Charlie Sheen in 2002. The relationship ended in a very public divorce in 2006, which included restraining orders and a legal battle over custody of their daughters. That personal conflict overshadowed her presence in big-budget films.
In 2008, she decided to take control of her own narrative. She premiered the reality show Denise Richards: It’s Complicated on the E! network to showcase her life as a single mother. Audiences responded with curiosity, but critics saw this move as the end of her status as an A-list movie star.
Television became her natural habitat out of necessity and economic convenience.
For years she built a run of supporting roles in shows like Blue Mountain State and 30 Rock. In 2011, she published her memoir The Real Girl Next Door, and the book made the New York Times best-seller list. Richards found that her private life generated more income and attention than her roles in low-budget films.
In 2019, she joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Her time on the show lasted two seasons and ended in 2020 after direct clashes with other cast members. During that period she earned one million dollars per season, becoming one of the best-paid actresses in the format at the time.
At the same time, she found stability in the daily soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. Since 2019, she has played the character Shauna Fulton, and this job has allowed her to film more than one hundred episodes with a steady professional routine. It's a form of active survival in an industry that often sidelines women once they reach their forties.
No one expected her to return to action movies.
In 2024, she shot the movie Angels Fallen: Warriors of Peace, in which she plays a weapons expert. The production had a tight budget and was aimed mainly at the video-on-demand market and digital platforms. Denise Richards averages three or four projects a year, between independent films and TV appearances.
Her most recent notable international TV work was in the series Paper Empire, filmed in 2024. She shares the cast of this production with Robert Davi and Wesley Snipes. The action scenes were shot on location in Saudi Arabia under a strict six-week production schedule.
