Deniz Can Aktaş was studying Marine Machinery Engineering at Piri Reis University when she realized her future wasn't on the open sea. Her family expected a naval officer, but the entertainment industry in Istanbul can be fickle about faces that look good on camera. In 2015, she made her debut in the series Tatlı Küçük Yalancılar and left the ships behind for good.
That first job was a local adaptation of an American production. It helped casting directors add her name to their lists of new talent. But the road was not immediate, because actors with looks like hers often get stuck in secondary, one-dimensional leading-man roles.
No one expected an engineer to end up leading casts in prime time.
Between 2016 and 2017, he took part in projects such as Hayat Bazen Tatlıdır. These were roles that showcased his youth but not his real dramatic ability. The chance to change that perception came in 2018 with Avlu, a series set in a women's prison where he played Alp Öztürk.
That character was dark and violent. It broke the good-guy image her early employers had assigned her, and audiences responded with very high ratings. Aktaş understood that longevity on Turkish television depends not on beauty but on the ability to provoke either rejection or empathy in the viewer.
And the risk paid off.
In 2020, she took on the challenge of starring in Menajerimi Ara, the Turkish version of a French hit about the world of talent agents. She played Barış Havas, and the chemistry with the rest of the cast sparked a social media phenomenon that boosted her international popularity. But Aktaş decided to step away from the comfort of the small screen for a while.
She took to the stage in 2021 to play Romeo in a theater production of Romeo ve Juliet. Theater demands a discipline that video editing often hides on television. The play staged more than 50 performances at various theaters across Turkey, with sold-out audiences.
It was a risky decision.
In 2022, she starred in Kasaba Doktoru, playing a surgeon with a traumatic past. The series required learning complex medical terminology and a restrained physical presence, which the actor worked on for months on sets built to resemble real hospitals. That project confirmed her interest in roles with a specific professional weight.
The year 2023 marked her return to revenge drama with Hudutsuz Sevda. In this production, she played Halil İbrahim, a man who returns to his hometown to confront family clans after years away. The action scenes filmed in the Black Sea region were shot in extreme weather conditions in mountain areas.
The series aired for 2024 and secured a renewal for its 2025 season due to international sales contracts. Production company MedYapım confirmed that the show is now distributed in more than 40 countries outside Turkey.
