The Face of the Girl Next Door

Diane Franklin was not the typical high school blonde that Hollywood sold by the pound in the eighties. She had unruly curls and a gaze that seemed to get the joke before the rest of the cast did. In 1982 she starred in The Last American Virgin and broke the hearts of a whole generation of teenagers who didn't expect such a bitter ending. That movie changed the rules of teen comedy without anyone seeing it coming.

And it worked.

That same year she stepped into the most famous house in horror cinema with Amityville II: The Possession. The shoot was a chaos of practical effects and creative tension, but she made her character stand out amid all the fake blood. Franklin knew how to choose projects that veered away from the conventional, even when the script seemed like a copy of another. Her ability to convey vulnerability and strength at the same time set her apart from the crowd of aspiring stars.

By the late 1982, she was already a recurring name in Los Angeles casting offices. But she never wanted to be just a pretty face on a teen bedroom poster. She preferred roles with some edge or a slightly off-kilter sense of humor.

The Camaro and Time Travel

In 1985 she made Better Off Dead. She played Monique, a French exchange student who fixes up a 1967 Camaro while dealing with a suicide-obsessed John Cusack. The film flopped at the box office during its theatrical release. **Franklin earned a modest salary** compared with the stars of the time, but her image was etched into video rental shelves across half the world.

The home video market did the rest.

Late in the decade she accepted the role of Princess Joanna in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. It was a 1989 production that nobody took seriously during filming. But the chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, combined with Franklin's presence, created an unexpected hit that still generates income from image rights today. Around that time she **turned down roles in major franchises** because she didn't want to be trapped in long-term contracts that would limit her creative freedom.

She decided to step away from the front lines to focus on her family and on teaching acting. It wasn't a dramatic retirement, and there were no scandals involved. She simply chose to live outside the industry's radar for years while raising her children and writing about her experiences on film sets.

She returned to horror in 2018.

She did so with The Amityville Murders, playing Louise DeFeo. It was a curious move because she returned to the franchise that made her famous, but in a different role, closing a professional circle three decades in the making. In 2023 she appeared in Waking Nightmare, and in 2024 she shot Pareidolia under the direction of Sebastian Funke. Franklin keeps her cult-figure status without needing the validation of the big platforms.

The actress published her autobiography in 2012 under the title Diane Franklin: The Excellent Adventures of the Last American Virgin. The book details the inner workings of an industry that tends to devour its young promises and offers details about contracts from the era. **She sold thousands of copies** among collectors and genre film fans who still turn up at conventions to get her signature on an old VHS tape.
