In June 1984, a helicopter landed at San Paolo Stadium in front of seventy-five thousand people who had not come to see a match, but a ten-minute show. Diego Armando Maradona stepped onto the grass, juggled the ball three times and kicked it into the stands. That afternoon, Naples bought a deity for seven and a half million dollars, a world record at the time.
He was born in 1960 in Lanús and grew up on the unpaved streets of Villa Fiorito. His father worked at a flour mill, and running water did not exist in their home.
He made his top-flight debut with Argentinos Juniors ten days before turning sixteen. That afternoon, the coach asked him to attempt a nutmeg on the first play, and the kid pulled it off without blinking against Juan Domingo Cabrera of Talleres de Córdoba.
The rest was pure whirlwind.
In 1982, FC Barcelona paid a fortune for his profile, but his time in Spain ended badly, marked by a serious hepatitis and a brutal tackle by Andoni Goikoetxea that shattered his left ankle. The 1984 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Club turned into a televised brawl that forced his immediate exit from Spanish league football.
So southern Italy served as both refuge and trap. In Naples he won two league titles and a UEFA Cup against the industrial giants of the north, turning football into a social drama of rich versus poor.
The defining moment came at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. In just four minutes against England, he summed up his entire story by scoring the goal of the century with his hand and the greatest solo run ever filmed. That second goal took eleven touches in ten seconds to cover sixty meters and leave five defenders sprawled on the turf of the Azteca Stadium.
Because Maradona never separated the game from the spectacle. He lived for the fixed camera and the roaring crowd.
The nineties opened the floodgates of public self-destruction. In 1991 came his first cocaine suspension in Italy, followed by police arrests in Buenos Aires and the final blow at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he was pulled off the field by a nurse after testing positive for ephedrine.
The footballer was gone, and the walking myth had begun.
Argentine television discovered in him a ratings powerhouse. In 2005 he hosted the show La noche del 10, an interview program in which he interviewed himself through an editing trick and welcomed Fidel Castro and Pelé, with screen shares of forty percent.
Film quickly grasped the tragic magnetism of his figure. In 1996 he starred in the fiction film El día que Maradona conoció a Gardel, though his real impact on screen came through documentaries. Emir Kusturica released Maradona by Kusturica in 2008, in which the Serbian filmmaker projected himself onto the star's excesses. In 2019, filmmaker Asif Kapadia built a meticulously precise visual autopsy with Diego Maradona, based on five hundred hours of unseen footage from his Neapolitan period.
In 2021, Amazon Prime Video released the biographical series Maradona, Blessed Dream, filmed in four countries to recreate his heart crises and his sporting triumphs.
But no hired actor managed to match the expressive intensity of the original in front of a microphone.
On November 25, 2020, he died in a rented house in the San Andrés neighborhood of Tigre from acute pulmonary edema caused by chronic heart failure. The official autopsy found a dilated heart weighing five hundred and three grams, nearly twice the normal weight for an adult.

Things you probably didn't know about Diego Maradona
A little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God.
I was waiting for my teammates to embrace me, and no one came. I told them, 'Come hug me, or the referee isn't going to allow it.' It was the hand of Diego.
They have sawed off my legs.
You Pasman, you have it inside, too.
Even now as a manager, when I suffer a loss it still feels like a first loss, the first I suffered as a player. And when I win, it is like my first win, too. This is me, this is my personality, it is who I am and will always be.
There is no secret here. I will give my all, as I always have. This way I prove to the people who hired me, and those who support me, how much it means.
