Tyler Perry's Hollywood Rise and Disney Breakthrough

Doc Shaw broke into television through the back door in Atlanta. In 2006, he landed the role of Malik Payne in the sitcom Tyler Perry's House of Payne after a highly competitive audition process. He was fourteen years old and had a natural gift for comedic timing that caught the attention of producers in California.

That's how Disney came knocking at his door.

In 2009, he joined the cast of The Suite Life on Deck to play Marcus Little. The change of pace was minimal, but the global exposure was huge for a teenager who was just getting started. Still, the actor did not want to get stuck in the role of the funny sidekick for kids and looked for projects that demanded more from his physical presence.

In 2010, she starred in Pair of Kings alongside Mitchel Musso. It was a youth fantasy series in which she had to learn choreographed combat techniques. The shoot ran for three seasons and gave her hands-on experience managing visual effects on set.

Physical transformation and big-budget cinema

During the filming of his final TV episodes in 2011, the actor made a drastic decision. He lost sixty kilos (about 132 pounds) over eighteen months for health reasons and to reinvent his professional image. The change was so noticeable that many fans of his earlier series couldn't recognize him in press photos.

Nobody recognized him in his next major project.

In 2014, he took part in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes under the direction of Matt Reeves. He played Ash using motion-capture technology, and the result was a physical performance far removed from canned laughter. It was a complex shoot in Vancouver and New Orleans with a budget of 170 million dollars.

Because Shaw quickly realized that auteur cinema demands a different kind of patience than television. In 2018, he reunited with Tyler Perry on the series The Paynes to reprise his role as Malik, this time with a much more mature approach. The show was taped at Perry's new studios in Georgia under an extremely fast shooting schedule.

Maturing in independent film

The actor sought stories with greater dramatic weight after his time in big special-effects franchises. In 2020, he took part in An American Pickle alongside Seth Rogen. It is a film that plays with historical absurdity, but it allowed him to work in a much sharper adult comedy setting.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2023, she joined the cast of The Dirty South as Roy. The film is a rural action thriller shot entirely on location in Louisiana. It was an independent production that stayed well away from the major Los Angeles commercial circuit.

In November 2023, the distributor Cineverse released the film on digital platforms with an R rating for violence and language. The final production budget did not exceed five million dollars.
