160 IQ. Fulbright Scholar at MIT. Black belt in karate. Hans Lundgren was not the typical aspiring actor when he arrived in New York in 1982.
He worked as a nightclub bouncer and bodyguard for Grace Jones, who got him into the business. His first role was a couple of seconds as a thug in A View to a Kill in 1985.
And the world met Ivan Drago.
During the filming of Rocky IV in 1985, Stallone asked him to hit him for real. Lundgren landed a punch to the chest that sent the star to intensive care for eight days. Doctors said the impact was similar to a head-on collision with a car.
That 110-kilo mountain of muscle and icy stare embodied Cold War fears. Fame came instantly. But Hollywood didn't know what to do with a Swedish chemical engineer who stood nearly six and a half feet tall.
In 1987 he starred in Masters of the Universe. It was a box-office disaster that nearly buried his career. Critics went after his stiff acting and the He-Man costume.
Then came The Punisher in 1989. It was the first adaptation of the Marvel character, but it went straight to video in the United States. The home video market was becoming his natural refuge.
The industry turned its back on him for fifteen years.
In 1992 he starred in Universal Soldier alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme. It was his last big commercial hit in the big-budget action cinema of that decade. The chemistry between them worked because their fighting styles were complete opposites.
After that, the industry turned its back on him for a long time. Lundgren took refuge in low-budget productions shot in Eastern Europe. He worked hard to pay the bills, but prestige was not on the menu.
Refusing to give up, he began directing his own films. In 2004, he made his directorial debut with The Defender. He found that controlling the frame interested him more than simply taking punches in front of the camera.
And the plan worked.
In 2010, Sylvester Stallone called him for The Expendables. It was a grand comeback to the big screen. He played Gunner Jensen, an unstable mercenary who, fittingly, held a degree in chemical engineering, a real nod to his own life.
His greatest acting recognition came in 2018 with Creed II. He reprised the role of Ivan Drago, but this time with human nuance and a clear weight of emotional defeat. The critics who tore him apart in the eighties praised his restraint.
But his biggest fight wasn't on a movie set. In 2023, Lundgren revealed that he had been battling kidney cancer since 2015. Doctors gave him only a few years to live in 2020, but a specialized treatment in Los Angeles managed to shrink the tumors.
But his body held up.
In 2024 the actor became a U.S. citizen after living in the country for more than forty years. He still trains every day and keeps a strict diet to avoid health setbacks.
In 2024 Lundgren wrapped post-production on Wanted Man, a film in which he writes, directs and stars, made on a budget of less than five million dollars.
