The Face Robert Bresson Found in a Magazine

Dominique Sanda wasn't looking for the movie camera. In 1969, she was working as a model for Vogue magazine when director Robert Bresson saw one of her photographs and decided she should star in Une femme douce. There were no screen tests or lengthy casting processes. The filmmaker was looking for a pure presence, and Sanda gave him a coolness that concealed an inner volcano.

That debut changed the course of the French film industry. Before turning twenty, she was already moving around film sets with an aristocratic detachment that fascinated the great auteurs of the era. Bernardo Bertolucci immediately called her to shoot Il conformista in 1970. In that film, she performed a tango with Stefania Sandrelli that broke the codes of permissible sensuality on the big screen.

It was a decision with no turning back.

Sanda never felt comfortable with the label of star. She preferred characters who lived on the margins of morality or history. In 1970, she worked again under Vittorio De Sica in The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and she became the symbol of a Jewish aristocracy doomed by the rise of Italian fascism.

Her Cannes triumph and rejection by Hollywood

In 1976, she earned the recognition that set her apart from her generation once and for all. She won the Cannes Best Actress award for her role in L'eredità Ferramonti. That honor cemented her status as a cult performer in Europe. But the American film industry came knocking with contracts she regarded with suspicion.

Then came the shoot for 1900.

Bertolucci brought her back for his historical epic of 1976. Sanda shared the screen with Robert De Niro and Gérard Depardieu in a production that lasted months and wore out half the crew. But she kept up with the pace of the geniuses. She appeared in John Huston's The Mackintosh Man in 1973, but the Los Angeles studio system felt stifling to her because of its lack of creative freedom.

She chose to take refuge in riskier projects. She worked with Liliana Cavani on Beyond Good and Evil in 1977 and with Benoît Jacquot on Les ailes de la colombe in 1981. Her career did not follow a straight line. She jumped from one country to another and from one language to another with an ease that drove her publicists to despair.

Refuge in the Southern Cone and a Measured Return

In the late 90s, she made a radical decision. She moved to Uruguay after meeting the philosopher Nicolae Cutzarida and decided that the pace of Paris no longer interested her. It was not a spiritual retreat, but it was a deliberate step away from the spotlight. There she began a phase devoted to theater and to films shot in Argentina or Chile that barely reached Spanish commercial cinemas.

Sanda never stopped working.

In 2014, Bertrand Bonello convinced her to play Yves Saint Laurent's mother in Saint Laurent. It was a brief role, but her voice and gaze carried the same authority they had in the 1970s. In 2020, she shot Le sorelle Macaluso under the direction of Emma Dante. That story about the passage of time and family memory allowed her to explore much rawer, less polished registers.

In 2021, she took part in the shoot of Il paradiso del pavone directed by Laura Bispuri. The film had its world premiere in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival that same year. Dominique Sanda currently lives in Uruguay and keeps her residence in the Punta Carretas neighborhood of Montevideo. Her last public appearance at a Class A European festival was recorded in 2021, with Italian box office earnings of less than two hundred thousand euros.
