William Omar Landrón Rivera preached from an evangelical pulpit in Bayamón before Hollywood discovered that his raspy voice worked as an unbeatable commercial draw. He left religious sermons behind in 2002 to sing about the asphalt. Four years later, he was already negotiating contracts in California.

During a concert in Los Angeles, actor Vin Diesel surprised everyone by joining him on stage to sing together. That off-script clash ended in an impromptu late-night dinner where an unlikely alliance was sealed for the American film industry.

Nobody saw that handshake coming.

The Asphalt of Santo Domingo and Screen Debut

Diesel wanted to shoot in the Dominican Republic to give the fourth installment of his car franchise a believable prologue. In 2009, he cast Landrón to star in Los Bandoleros, a twenty-minute short film originally intended as bonus material for home releases. But the musician's physical presence in front of the lens overflowed the promotional footage.

So Universal Pictures decided to add him to the official cast of Fast & Furious that same year. Landrón took on the role of Rico Santos, a Caribbean mechanic and thief who constantly argued with Tego Calderón about cheap politics and stolen fuel. He didn't need to pretend much in front of the camera, and he earned a modest salary for a role that brought in more than $360 million at the box office.

On set, Landrón didn't read conventional scripts or follow the classic instructions of casting directors. Because he saw commercial cinema as a promotional lever rather than a sacred calling, his job consisted of firing off dry one-liners in response to the muscle-flexing theatrics of the Los Angeles stars.

The Cash Register of Rio de Janeiro

The real jump in scale came with Fast Five in 2011. Director Justin Lin turned the car saga into a multimillion-dollar heist movie and gave Landrón several scenes in which his character handled stacks of cash in European casinos.

And the gamble paid off.

The track Danza Kuduro played over the closing credits and served as the soundtrack for the film's economic climax. The song surpassed 1,400 million streams on digital platforms and pulled young moviegoers from the theaters straight into record stores.

But the singer soon grew tired of Hollywood's demands. He turned down offers to headline low-budget action films in the Hispanic market because he hated the twelve-hour daily waits between shots. He preferred to supervise recordings in his own studio rather than submit to editors in Burbank.

False Retirements and Red Ink

For years, his presence on film sets was minimal. He made a brief return in The Fate of the Furious in 2017 and reprised his character in F9 for 2021 only after demanding special conditions from the production. He shot his scenes in compressed forty-eight-hour sessions so he could go straight back to his music commitments.

This on-and-off relationship with film coincided with legal disputes over the record contracts he signed early in his career. He spent whole seasons out of public life at his horse ranch in Orlando, ignoring calls from agents and casting directors.

In 2024, he survived surgery for kidney cancer in Florida and returned to his international tours without affecting pending deals with the major studios. The action franchise kept his celebrity profile open for future sequels, but Landrón shut down his production company Sugar Cream Music with an accumulated debt of $1.2 million after the pre-production of an independent heist film in San Juan fell through.
