Erika Balagtas understands film through the spreadsheet and the mud of the set. She is not someone who seeks the spotlight, because her real work happens where no one is looking. In 2016, she coordinated production on Birdshot. That film, directed by Mikhail Red, became the first Filipino movie distributed worldwide by Netflix.
It was the first sign of something bigger.
Balagtas learned the craft in an industry that often works against the clock and with limited resources. But her approach was always different. Instead of accepting the shortcomings of the local system, she chose to apply an international work structure that would allow her country's stories to compete beyond its borders. In 2019, she produced Dead Kids under added pressure.
That project was Netflix's first original production in the Philippines. She managed a crew of more than one hundred people under safety and quality standards that the Manila industry had rarely experienced until then. And the bet paid off.
Her time at Globe Studios defined a way of producing in which genre films took absolute priority. In 2018, she worked on Eerie. That psychological horror film managed to break cultural barriers and worked in markets as different as Southeast Asia and Latin America.
Money never goes far in Manila.
That is why Balagtas specialized in optimizing technical resources in post-production. In 2021, she oversaw the logistics of several projects aiming to raise the visual level of the Filipino thriller. She cut shooting time by 12% through location planning that avoided the chronic traffic jams of the capital.
Before reaching the top offices, she worked in television and the most aggressive advertising. In 2011, she took part in the production of The Woman in the Septic Tank. That satire of auteur cinema and the exploitation of poverty won three awards at the Manila Film Festival. But she was already looking toward exporting stories with a more universal visual language.
She doesn't believe in the artist's improvisation.
She prefers to talk about contracts, production insurance and the importance of good catering in keeping the crew's morale up. For Balagtas, film is an industry of precision before it is an exercise in ego. In 2023, she closed out supervision of three fiction projects for the Asian market with a combined budget of four million dollars.
