Ethan Cutkosky was seven years old when his face began appearing in print ads and TV commercials in Chicago. He wasn't looking for fame, but fate put a casting call for Fred Claus in front of him in 2007. It was his first real contact with the Hollywood industry, before he turned ten.
Horror gave him his first major role.
In 2009, he played Barto in The Unborn. Director David S. Goyer was looking for a boy with an unsettling gaze, and Ethan fit the profile perfectly. During filming, he asked to perform his own stunts because he enjoyed the controlled chaos of the set. That is how his reputation as a methodical, fearless actor began to take shape before he reached his teens.
The big change came in 2011 with the premiere of Shameless on the Showtime network. Cutkosky landed the role of Carl Gallagher and stayed with the series for eleven consecutive seasons. He literally grew up in front of the cameras as his character evolved from a boy with psychopathic tendencies into a young man searching for his place in the military academy.
The series producers allowed the actor to keep attending his public school in St. Charles during filming. He constantly traveled between Illinois and Los Angeles to stay in touch with his life away from the spotlight. For him, keeping his feet on the ground was vital while his castmates were winning international awards.
The authenticity of his performance kept the character from falling into caricature.
The bet on naturalism paid off. In 2013, he appeared in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, playing a troubled teenager. That role confirmed that his ability to convey darkness was not a childhood accident but a technical tool he had mastered with precision.
After wrapping Shameless in 2021, the actor decided to diversify his creative interests. He founded his own clothing brand, Khaotic Collective, and began producing music under the same label. His first single, Erase Me, came out that same year and revealed a much more introspective side than his previous work on screen.
In 2022, he appeared in an episode of The Conners, playing Neville. But his main interest shifted toward independent film and managing his own projects. He wanted to move away from the juvenile delinquent image that followed him for more than a decade on cable television.
He shot Going Places in 2023 under the direction of Max Chernov. On this project he shared the cast with a young ensemble and explored a comedy tone different from what he was used to. The film followed the misadventures of three friends and showed a different kind of acting maturity in his gestures and silences.
The distribution deal for this latest production closed for nearly two million dollars after a run in limited release theaters.
