Fatih Akin was born in Hamburg in 1973 and has never tried to hide it. His parents arrived from Turkey looking for a better life, but he preferred to find his own in the video stores of the Altona neighborhood. In 1995, he shot his first short film, and just three years later he made his feature debut with Short Sharp Shock.
Akin doesn't ask permission to enter the festivals. In 2004, he won the Golden Bear in Berlin with Head-On. It was a sharp blow to the table of European cinema. The story of Sibel and Cahit wasn't after easy tears but rather sweat and blood.
And the gamble paid off.
German critics watched him closely from that moment on. But Akin decided he didn't want to be just the spokesman for Turkish immigration. In 2007, he released Edge of Heaven, and in 2009 he moved into comedy with Soul Kitchen. That latter film was a tribute to his Hamburg roots and to the culture of industrial neighborhoods.
Before shooting, Akin prefers to listen to music to find the tone of the scene. His films sound like punk and rap because he understands that editing rhythm must be physical. In 2005, he directed the documentary Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (exploring the musical richness of the city of his parents).
Not everything in his career has been applause. In 2014, he presented The Father and the reception was icy. The film tackled the Armenian genocide with a technical ambition that never quite worked at the international box office. It was a tough moment for his production company, Corazón International.
Akin takes no prisoners.
In 2017, he got back on track with In the Fade. The film won Diane Kruger the best actress award at Cannes and put the spotlight on far-right terrorism in Germany. In 2019, he switched gears to shoot The Golden Glove. It's a film about a serial killer that caused fainting spells at press screenings due to its visual brutality.
In 2022, he released Rheingold and showed that his interest in the streets remained intact. The film follows rapper Giwar Hajabi (known as Xatar) from his childhood in Iraq to German prisons. It's a crime drama that uses a far more agile narrative structure than his dramas of the previous decade.
Cinema is a matter of rhythm.
By 2025, Akin had scheduled the shoot for Amrum, based on the memoir of Hark Bohm. It's a project that sets the story back in World War II-era Germany. The budget for Rheingold exceeded 10 million euros, and it ended its commercial run with more than one million viewers in German cinemas.
