In 1984, a musician from Caracas with an Italian family background walked into the studio with a demo tape under his arm and little faith from the record executives. His name was Franco Atilio de Vita, and he had spent time in unsuccessful rock bands such as Corpus and Ícaro. He released his self-titled debut album, known for its red cover, relying only on an acoustic piano and a raw voice. The album sold more than half a million copies in Venezuela within months, thanks to the momentum of songs such as Un buen perdedor.

And the gamble paid off.

In 1986, the album Fantasia arrived with a melody that changed how TV fiction was consumed: Sólo importas tú. Venezuelan network RCTV used the song as the theme for the telenovela La dama de rosa. When the production crossed the Atlantic to air on Televisión Española in the late 1980s, half of Spain learned the chorus by heart in front of the screen. That reserved songwriter filled bullrings and sports arenas across Spain without relying on flashy costumes or synchronized dance routines of the era.

The Three-Minute Screenwriter

De Vita never wrote conventional ballads. He always wrote with a cinematic frame in mind. In 1988, he released Al norte del sur, an album that combined string arrangements and synthesizers to tell urban stories with surgical precision. It included Louis, an almost four-minute sound portrait of a Caracas taxi driver who daydreamed about John Lennon while traffic gnawed at his stomach. The album sold more than one million units before the end of the 1980s.

In 1990, he took another leap with the album Extranjero and released No basta. The industry wanted sugary lyrics about teenage breakups, but he chose to deliver a blunt condemnation of absent parents who buy their children's affection with expensive gifts. The music video, shot in black and white with a documentary aesthetic, won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Latin Video in 1991.

But writing for others concealed an even greater goldmine.

The Hidden Studio and the Analog Live Sound

In 1998, Ricky Martin was looking for a less festive direction for his repertoire and knocked on De Vita's door. Franco gave him Vuelve, an orchestral piece that served as the soundtrack for the Mexican telenovela Pueblo chico, infierno grande and helped propel an album to eight million copies sold worldwide. In 2003, he repeated the formula for the Puerto Rican singer with Tal vez and also wrote Y tú te vas for Chayanne, securing lucrative multimillion-dollar publishing rights.

For years, he wrote songs from his apartment in Madrid, far from the spotlight and the red carpets.

In 2011, he decided to revisit his entire repertoire in front of an audience with the acoustic album En primera fila, recorded live at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The concert brought together artists with very different profiles, such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Alejandra Guzmán, and Sin Bandera. The recording won two Latin Grammy Awards in November 2011.

The format had a second installment in 2013 with Vuelve en primera fila, where he shared the stage with Spanish stars such as Vanesa Martín and Rosario Flores.

The live performances closed a golden era.

In 2016, he released Libre, his last full studio album, with nine original tracks and self-produced. In 2020, he launched the independent single Frágiles, and in 2024 he recorded VinoTinto to support Venezuela's national soccer team. The original masters from his first sessions for the Sonográfica record label sit on two-inch tape reels stored in climate-controlled warehouses between Caracas and Miami.
