In 2001, a teenager from Bury walked onto the set of Hollyoaks without knowing she would spend the next four years there. Gemma Atkinson wasn't chasing acting prestige but a steady paycheck from one of the most-watched shows among British young audiences. She played Lisa Hunter, and the media impact was immediate.

Fame comes with a price, and she paid it quickly.

But the label of daytime TV star weighs heavily when you want to make movies. Atkinson decided to leave the show in 2005 to try her luck in other, less restrictive formats. She worked in theater and reality TV before landing in horror productions that wanted familiar names for the domestic market.

Russian Snow and Tight Budgets

In 2013, she starred in The Dyatlov Pass Incident, directed by Renny Harlin. It was a grueling shoot in extreme weather conditions, aimed at giving authenticity to a Russian urban legend. The film grossed just over five million dollars worldwide.

It wasn't the big break into the major leagues that many expected, but it taught her how the machinery of mid-budget productions worked. Atkinson never disowned these genre films. In 2014 she appeared in Night of the Living 3D Dead and kept landing roles where a physical look was a requirement of the script.

And then she returned to long-running television.

She agreed to join Emmerdale in 2015 to play Carly Hope. The role brought back the stability of daily shoots and massive exposure in prime-time slots. She spent two years on the show before dancing changed her professional priorities.

The reality business

In 2017, she took part in the show Strictly Come Dancing.

That's where she met her partner and began managing her public image differently. She stopped being just an actress and became a health advocate and presenter on Hits Radio. Audiences connected more with her natural side than with the fictional characters she was being offered at the time.

In 2019, she published her first fitness book, titled The 7 Day Juice Challenge. The book sold strongly in the UK and definitively moved her away from mainstream film casting. She then focused on creating her own content and managing her personal brand around wellness.

In 2023, she premiered her own documentary-style reality show alongside Gorka Márquez. The production of Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens showed the behind-the-scenes of her second pregnancy with unusual candor. The show's second season was confirmed for 2024 with a small crew of just ten people.
