Irish mud doesn't care about bloodlines. Georgia Hirst didn't land on the set of Vikings to coast on her father's name (Michael Hirst, the series creator), but to hold up the shield in the rain while other well-known actors asked for a blanket between takes. In 2013, she put on Torvi's costume for a role that was meant to be brief. But the camera picked up something in her gaze that wasn't in the original script.
Irish mud doesn't care about bloodlines.
Her training at the Drama Centre London gave her the technical tools she needed to survive a physically demanding shoot. At that school, she crossed paths with performers chasing glory in classical theater. She preferred the gritty realism of wooden axes and blood prosthetics. And that was key to her staying power on the History Channel series for six straight seasons.
Torvi grew from a chieftain's wife into a warrior with political weight of her own. Georgia Hirst handled that growth with a restraint rarely seen in actresses of her generation. She didn't need to shout to command respect in the great hall of Kattegat. But the end of the series in 2020 pushed the actress to seek fresh air beyond family sagas and woolen tunics.
After her Nordic chapter ended, she looked for projects that would break away from her image as a medieval shieldmaiden. In 2018, she made Ravers, a foray into genre cinema where horror blended with the culture of underground parties. It was a necessary change of pace to show that her face fit the contemporary urban aesthetic. That film allowed her to explore fear from a physical angle quite different from the pitched battles.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020, she took part in Five Dates, a narrative experiment shot during the global lockdown. It was an interactive romantic comedy in which players chose the characters' fate through real video calls. Georgia Hirst filmed her scenes from her own home, using portable lighting kits and handling the sound herself. It was an exercise in technical humility that moved her away from big studio productions for good.
Her sister Maude Hirst also appeared in the cast of Vikings in the show's early years. That family connection created a natural on-screen chemistry that viewers praised. But both sisters chose to go their separate professional ways to keep the Hirst name from becoming a limiting label in the British industry.
The actress decided to diversify her career by creating the podcast To My Younger Self. In it, she interviews public figures about the mistakes they made in their youth and how they manage their mental health. It's a personal project she funds independently to keep full control over the content. But she hasn't given up acting for the audio format.
In 2024, she filmed the horror movie Death Do Us Part in Canada under the direction of Nicholas Humphries. Shooting took place on natural locations in British Columbia with a tight budget and a schedule of just three weeks. For this role, she had to sit through special effects makeup sessions lasting four hours a day before the shooting day began.
The production of 2024 had a small crew of thirty people.
