In 1975 Gloria Guida put on a school uniform, and Italian commercial cinema found a gold mine. She was nineteen when she shot La liceale under the direction of Michele Massimo Tarantini. That film was not seeking critical applause in Venice, but it achieved something more tangible for the producers of the era. It raked in millions of lire by exploiting a mix of innocence and eroticism that saturated movie theaters for nearly a decade.
The industry quickly typecast her in the sexy comedy genre, and she went along with it because work kept knocking at her door. But Guida did not come from the world of fashion or beauty pageants like other women of her generation. Before stepping in front of a camera, she tried to become a singer and even took part in the Un disco per l'estate festival in 1972.
That wasn't art, but it filled theaters.
In the second half of the seventies she made a string of titles such as La liceale nella classe dei ripetenti and Avere vent’anni. In the latter she worked alongside Lilli Carati under the direction of Fernando Di Leo. It was one of the few moments when her career brushed against a rawer, more existentialist cinema (though wrapped in the usual exploitation of the era). Critics at the serious magazines ignored her, while she became the financial engine of the Roman studios.
In 1979, she met Johnny Dorelli during the filming of the musical comedy Accendiamo la lampada. That encounter drastically changed her life priorities. They married years later, and she decided that film had already given her everything she needed. Guida never seemed to have the consuming ambition of other actresses who die for a dramatic role that will validate them.
Her last film from that period was Sesso e volentieri in 1982. She was only twenty-six when she decided to step away from the spotlight. It was a genuine retirement, not a marketing strategy to return with more force. She focused on her daughter Guendalina and her family life in Rome, moving away from scripts that only wanted her shower nudity.
And the public waited for her for decades.
For nearly thirty years, she rarely appeared regularly on a film or television set. She turned down constant offers to play mature versions of her youthful characters. But in 2010, she agreed to take part in the series Fratelli Benvenuti. It wasn't a triumphant comeback aimed at awards, but a way to reconnect with the craft from a much more relaxed place, and one that was less physically demanding.
Italian television brought her back to the general public through pure entertainment programs. In 2018 she hosted Le Ragazze on Rai 3 (an interview show where she showed a composure many did not expect). She was no longer the teenager of the seventies, but she kept a telegenic quality that the camera captured effortlessly. Her image evolved into that of an elegant woman who handled her past with complete ease.
In 2022, she returned to film with the movie Improvvisamente Natale. In this project she worked alongside Diego Abatantuono under the direction of Francesco Patierno. It was a supporting role in a family comedy released directly to digital platforms. The production was shot in the Dolomites on a budget that was standard by Italian industry standards of that decade.
The movie premiered in November 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
