Hanako Greensmith grew up among the strings of a cello and in a household where classical music was no hobby. Her father was a prestigious cellist and her mother a pianist with deep academic training. But she decided that her voice and body would tell stories instead of a wooden instrument.
In 2018, she completed her studies at Pace University in the musical theater program. That technical training in New York gave her a physical foundation that few television actors keep. In musical theater, if there is no precision, the show falls apart.
And the stage was her first real refuge.
Before reaching the major national networks, she worked in productions such as Monster: The Musical. There she learned to project her voice and understood that acting is a craft of repetition and endurance. During those early years of training, Greensmith was not chasing quick fame but a technique that would help her survive auditions in the Big Apple.
She appeared briefly in series such as Bull or FBI during 2018 and 2019. These were small parts (just a few lines), but they helped pay the bills while she kept refining her vocal range. Back then, no one suspected that a first responder's uniform would permanently change the course of her career.
In 2020, she first put on the uniform of Violet Mikami in the eighth season of Chicago Fire. She joined as a supporting character to fill a narrative gap in the ambulance 61. But her chemistry with the rest of the cast was so evident that the producers decided to expand her contract.
Music was never a plan B.
In 2021, production promoted her to a regular character for the series' tenth season. Greensmith brought a mix of sarcasm and vulnerability that fit perfectly into Dick Wolf's franchise machinery. Her character had to deal with storylines about grief and complicated relationships that demanded an emotional control far removed from the fireworks of musical theater.
Filming a television series with 22 episodes a year is a meat grinder for any performer. She kept up the pace thanks to the conservatory discipline she brought from home. During the recordings in Chicago in extreme temperatures, Greensmith proved that technical rigor is more useful than any passing inspiration.
Away from the film set, she has returned to her work as a singer-songwriter. In 2022, she released several tracks that show a clear influence of folk and alternative pop. They are not songs written for the commercial charts. They are raw pieces where her voice is once again the center of everything.
Greensmith avoids unnecessary social events and prefers to keep a low profile in Spanish and international media. In her interviews, she tends to talk more about the structure of scenes than about her private life. That distance from the media spotlight has allowed her to protect a career that steers clear of tabloid scandals.
In 2024, she remained in the main cast of Chicago Fire for its thirteenth season. Her contract with NBC stayed stable while other cast members left the series due to the wear and tear of the format. The production of each episode of this season reached an average cost of six million dollars per installment.
