The Body as a Precision Tool

Harry Shum Jr. was born in Limón, Costa Rica, on 1982. His parents moved there from Hong Kong to run a family business, and Spanish was his first language before he learned English or Cantonese. When the family relocated to San Francisco, the culture shock was unavoidable. In high school he started dancing on a dare from his friends, and it ended up becoming the center of his creative life.

He worked as a backup dancer for Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Beyoncé before anyone knew his name. He appeared in the famous iPod silhouette ads and in several installments of the Step Up franchise. But his ambition went beyond performing choreography for other artists. In 2009, he joined the cast of Glee to play Mike Chang.

And the gamble paid off.

In the first seasons, he barely had any dialogue. The writers kept him in the background of the frame because his main value was physical. But audiences began demanding more screen time for him. In 2011, the series gave him storylines of his own and he landed a permanent contract that kept him on the show until 2015. That shoot was a school of technical endurance, with sixteen-hour days spent between dance numbers and voice recordings.

Because Shum Jr. understood early that physical appearance has an expiration date, he began producing his own digital projects such as The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers. At this stage, he explored visual storytelling without depending on the major studios in Los Angeles.

The Global Fandom Phenomenon

In 2016, he took on the role of Magnus Bane in the series Shadowhunters. Playing an immortal, bisexual warlock gave him an international fan base that still drives much of his media visibility today. The chemistry with his co-star was the engine of the series for three seasons. In 2018, the production abruptly ended despite fan protests on social media.

But that same year, film came calling with Crazy Rich Asians. Although his part was brief, it became a key piece for the future of the franchise. Filming in Singapore allowed him to connect with an Asian industry that was beginning to claim its place in the American market.

Not everything was a commercial success.

In 2019, he starred in the thriller Burn, and in 2020 he starred in the romantic drama All My Life. The latter film was based on a true story about terminal cancer, and critics were cold toward the final result. Despite his acting effort, the film did not achieve the impact it hoped for at the international box office.

Entering the Canon of Major Studios

The year 2022 marked a big change in scale for his career. He joined the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once, where he played Chad, a cook under the control of a raccoon. The film won seven Oscars and grossed more than $140 million worldwide. Shum Jr. brought a comic physicality reminiscent of classic silent film.

In 2022, he also joined the nineteenth season of Grey’s Anatomy. He plays Benson Blue Kwan, a resident with a competitive and somewhat dark past. The ABC series required a much more restrained and subdued performance than his previous work in the fantasy genre.

His training as a dancer still shapes how he moves in front of the camera.

In 2023, he took part in the dubbing of the animated series Blue Eye Samurai for Netflix. That same year, he lent his voice to a character in the DC film Legion of Super-Heroes. His ability to move between broadcast television and independent film keeps his workload steady.

In 2024, he voiced the character Sleech in the animated series The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. His contract for the twentieth season of the Disney medical drama was signed under strict confidentiality clauses about the future of his character.
