Hiroki Touchi was born in Tokyo in 1966. His academic training at the Faculty of Arts of Nihon University was not aimed at dubbing but at physical acting and working on the theater stage.
During his early career he focused on conventional acting. But his vocal destiny changed when talent agencies noticed an uncommon baritone register in someone his age. His voice had a specific weight that set it apart from the higher tones typical of young leads in the late 1990s.
The dubbing industry is a precision machine.
He entered the industry through fukikae, the dubbing of foreign productions into Japanese. Touchi became the regular voice of actors such as Will Smith and Sam Worthington. In 2009 he voiced Jake Sully in the Japanese version of Avatar, and that performance cemented his status as a top-tier actor for international distributors.
But global audiences know him for his ability to humanize tormented characters in anime. His role as Abel Nightroad in Trinity Blood in 2005 showed a side that blended absolute calm with contained violence. It was a technically demanding job that required sudden shifts in tone.
Then came video games.
Touchi's career is hard to understand without his connection to interactive entertainment. In 2007 he took on the role of Nathan Drake in the Japanese version of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. His performance was so well received that Naughty Dog and Sony kept his voice for the entire franchise. He made a character designed in California sound natural and cynical to the ears of a player in Kyoto.
His connection to the Resident Evil franchise is another pillar of his professional career. By lending his voice to Chris Redfield, he gave the hero the gravitas needed for the dramatic turns the franchise took starting with its fifth numbered installment.
He didn't always seek the spotlight. In series like Bleach, he played Ginjo Kugo, and in Fairy Tail he voiced Panther Lily. These supporting roles call for a very disciplined use of his vocal range so he doesn't overshadow the main story.
Technique was everything.
In 2023 he took part in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, voicing Heiter. The role requires a mix of wisdom and physical decay that only an actor with decades of experience can pull off convincingly. In 2024 he continued his work on The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse, maintaining the same vocal consistency he had twenty years earlier.
Touchi avoids excessive public appearances and prefers control of the studio. His method involves studying the body language of the original actor or the design of the animated character before delivering the first line. Because for him, dubbing is not translating but rebuilding an emotion from scratch.
His contract with the agency Office Osawa guarantees his presence in the major productions of the next decade. In 2025 he is scheduled to take part in several high-budget animation projects whose full casts have not yet been revealed. The session fee for an actor of his rank exceeds 45,000 yen per basic half-hour episode.
