Ian Roberts was born in Queens in 1965, but his true identity was forged in the trenches of Chicago improv. He wasn't chasing the quick fame of club comics. He wanted to break the structure of conventional comedy, and for that he needed allies who understood chaos as an academic discipline.
In 1990, he co-founded the Upright Citizens Brigade with Matt Besser, Amy Poehler and Matt Walsh. They started out performing in small venues where audiences sometimes didn't reach ten people. But their insistence on a rigorous method of physical comedy and absurd logic eventually created a school of its own.
It was a seismic shift in American comedy.
In 1998, he brought his sketch format to television with the series Upright Citizens Brigade on Comedy Central. There he refined a writing technique based on finding the breaking point of an everyday situation and pushing it into absurdity. Roberts played celebrities with a rigid authority that crumbled in front of the camera.
Many actors of his generation got lost chasing leading roles in Hollywood. Roberts preferred control of the blank page. He took supporting parts in films like Bring It On in 2000, playing an obsessive choreographer. That job taught him how the studio machinery worked from the inside.
The script became his main weapon.
In 2012, he took on the role of executive producer and writer on Key & Peele. It was no ordinary assignment, since the project demanded surgical precision to tackle issues of identity and race through humor. Over the show's five seasons, Roberts helped write more than fifty episodes.
The bet paid off both administratively and creatively. In 2016, he won the Emmy for Outstanding Sketch Series for his work on that project. But Roberts never stopped nurturing new talent. At his schools in New York and Los Angeles, he introduced a learning system where game theory was the foundation of everything.
Roberts moved away from the spotlight to focus on building solid narrative structures. In 2014, he created the series Playing House with Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. The tone here was different (more human and less cynical), but it kept the sharp dialogue he learned in his years of live theater.
Because for Roberts, comedy isn't about jokes but about rhythm. In 2015, he wrote the screenplay for the movie Get Hard starring Will Ferrell. Critics were harsh on the film, but its box office take topped 111 million dollars worldwide.
In 2022, he worked on the series Reboot, playing a stage director in a parody of the TV industry itself. He stays involved in teaching and in supervising other writers' scripts from his office. The UCB school's Sunset Boulevard location closed its doors for good in 2020 due to financial problems caused by the global health crisis.
