In November 2019, forty-five thousand people fill the Atanasio Girardot stadium in Medellín while, on the surrounding avenues, police disperse protests against the government of Iván Duque with tear gas. In the dressing room, José Álvaro Osorio Balvin swallows pills to stop a panic attack documented down to the millimeter before going out to sing.
A movie camera sits a foot from his face, capturing his every breath. New York filmmaker Matthew Heineman was not after the typical flattering hagiography for video platforms, but rather a record of the mental toll on a man overwhelmed by the demands of his own audience.
That came to the screen in 2021 under the title The Boy from Medellín.
The film dismantles the armor of the untouchable reggaeton star. The edit exposes his doubts about taking a political stance against state violence and shows the physical fear the crowd in the stands provokes in him. That constant contradiction between commercial calculation and psychological vulnerability defines his entire public career.
No one builds a pop empire out of indifference.
Balvin grew up in a well-off family in Medellín until his father's business went bankrupt and wrecked the household finances. Before filling arenas, he spent years painting houses in Miami, selling clothes at flea markets and trying his luck with electric guitars in garage rock bands. In 2009 he signed his first record deal with EMI Colombia and began producing urban tracks with a mathematical obsession for clean melodic structures.
Around 2017, urban music in Spanish was still tied to a repetitive aesthetic of yachts, pricey bottles and smoke-filled sets. Balvin understood that breaking into the Anglo market did not depend on translating his lyrics into English, but on raising the art direction to the level of major studio productions.
In 2018, he hired California director Colin Tilley to reinvent his on-screen image. Together, in 2020, they conceived the concept album Colores, where each song worked as a standalone short film with a color palette coordinated alongside Japanese visual artist Takashi Murakami. More than 3,000 million cumulative views on digital platforms confirmed that refined production design could compete directly with haute couture and contemporary art galleries.
Hollywood picked up the signal right away.
In 2017 he recorded “Hey Ma” with Camila Cabello for the soundtrack of The Fate of the Furious. In 2020 he signed “Ritmo” with The Black Eyed Peas for the film Bad Boys for Life, a production that dominated the international box office before theaters closed during the pandemic. Three years later, in 2023, the street-racing franchise called him back to shoot the music video for “Toretto” within the promotional footage of Fast X, sharing the frame with Vin Diesel amid souped-up cars.
But aesthetic control of the sets offers no shield when the conflict erupts outside the script.
In 2022, the industry handed him a devastating public blow after his war of words with Residente and criticism of his lack of response to the social movements in his country. Brands hesitated, and media pressure cornered him.
The musician decided to cut his losses and disappear from the public radar for twenty-five months of voluntary retirement, halting the nonstop single release schedule that streaming platforms demanded.
And the pit stop paid off.
In August 2024, Balvin released Rayo, an album named in tribute to the first used car his father gave him in Medellín when he was just starting to record demo tapes on cassette. The track list moved away from grand conceptual constructions and relied on straightforward club beats recorded with a new wave of performers such as Saiko and Bad Gyal.
To close out the album's fifteen tracks, thirty-four producers and fifty-four credited songwriters passed through the studio. Engineer Carlos Alejandro Patiño, Mosty, mastered thirteen of those tracks in Medellín using a two-channel analog processor before sending the final mixes to the pressing plant.
