In July 2017, a local Los Angeles news crew parked its vans on a quiet street in West Hollywood. Neighbors had spent weeks complaining about bonfires in yards, furniture burning in empty pools and hordes of teenagers camping out on the asphalt. The person behind that mess lived at number 4614.
He was twenty years old, appearing every week on kids' cable TV and cashing Disney Channel checks.
Nobody at the Burbank offices saw the noise coming.
Jake Paul entered scripted TV through Vine, a six-second video app where he built up five million followers before turning eighteen. Network executives saw in him a magnet for young audiences and gave him the role of Dirk Mann in the comedy Bizaardvark in 2016. His character was an online creator of absurd challenges, an exact caricature of what Paul was already doing in his everyday life in front of his phone.
But the coexistence between a corporation obsessed with family-friendly polish and a kid from Ohio willing to burn tires in his backyard lasted just over a season. Disney canceled his contract in the middle of filming the second installment after the neighborhood reports aired. That forced exit didn't slow him down at all. On the contrary, it fueled his YouTube channel, where his response video topped ten million views in less than twenty-four hours.
Before the boxing gloves, there were low-key attempts in low-budget movies. He appeared in comedies made exclusively for digital viewing, such as Dance Camp in 2016 and the satire Airplane Mode in 2019, a film written by his inner circle that aimed to pay tribute to classic slapstick comedy but sank without making a dent at the box office or with critics. Traditional screens never gave him the absolute control he already wielded from his own production company.
So he brought the drama of entertainment into contact sports.
In August 2018, he fought in Manchester against another digital creator in an internet-streamed event that generated more than a million pay-per-view buys. Paul discovered that mass audiences didn't need elaborate scripts or cardboard sets. All it took was building a convincing villain, selling a bloody rivalry and charging admission to witness the outcome live.
The audience paid to watch the demolition.
In 2021, he co-founded Most Valuable Promotions with former Showtime strategy director Nakisa Bidarian. The company wasn't born as a classic sports club but as a promoter designed to exploit the logic of reality TV. It signed figures like world champion Amanda Serrano and put together fight cards where technique on the canvas mattered less than the narrative of mutual hatred manufactured at press conferences.
Netflix studied the phenomenon for months before buying the whole story. In 2023, the platform premiered the documentary Untold: Jake Paul the Golden Boy, a seventy-minute production focused on his childhood in Cleveland and his early wins against veteran mixed martial artists. The film worked as the corporate prologue to a far more ambitious operation.
On November 15, 2024, he stepped into the ring at AT&T Stadium in Texas against Mike Tyson, with a thirty-one-year age gap between them. The global broadcast caused intermittent technical glitches in the platform's infrastructure and drew sixty million households live during the main event.
The event brought in 18.1 million dollars at the physical box office and ended with a unanimous decision from the judges after eight two-minute rounds.
