Jean-Jacques Annaud found his lead on the cover of a teen magazine.
Jane March Horwood was born in London in 1973 and won a modeling contest at age fourteen. But her life changed when the French director saw her photo and chose her to star in The Lover. That 1992 film contained sex scenes so realistic that the British press dubbed her the Sinner of Pinner.
And the noise didn't stop.
The scandal sold tickets all over the world. But it also typecast an actress who was only beginning to understand how the industry worked. In 1994, she shot Color of Night with Bruce Willis. American critics were merciless toward the film.
That Hollywood production aimed to repeat the erotic impact of her debut but only earned several Razzie Awards and a frosty reception in a market no longer shocked by full nudity. March played a woman with multiple personalities in a complex shoot. The lack of chemistry with Willis did not help save a script with too many cracks.
For much of the 1990s, she tried to move away from explicit scenes. In 1998, she appeared in Tarzan and the Lost City, playing Jane. It was a personal bet on family-friendly adventure cinema. But audiences kept viewing her through the lens of her early work.
So she decided to space out her appearances in major California studio productions. She preferred to focus on lower-budget European projects or independent films. In 2010 she took part in the blockbuster Clash of the Titans playing Hera. It was a brief role that didn't require much emotional commitment.
The system devoured her too soon.
In 2012, she accepted the role of the wicked queen in Grimm's Snow White. It was a low-budget version produced by The Asylum. That shift toward fantasy genre films marked a stage of professional maturity, away from the media spotlight.
In 2013, she worked on the TV movie The Sweeter Side of Life. There she played Lana, a woman seeking a new life after a divorce. Because Jane March has always preferred the calm of family life to the constant exposure of the red carpet.
In 2022, she joined the cast of the comedy Party Piece under the direction of Lindsay Duke. The story centers on the dynamics of a group of friends during a dinner that goes wrong. Jane March plays a supporting character with a far more relaxed tone than her youthful roles.
Filming in Hertfordshire took three weeks.
