Janet Munro was born in Blackpool in 1934 and spent her childhood surrounded by the stage, since her father was a well-known variety comedian. By her twenties, she was already working steadily in British theater and television. But her luck changed dramatically when Walt Disney noticed her during a screen test in London.
The studio offered her a five-film contract in 1958. She was the first actress to sign an exclusive deal of this kind with the Mickey Mouse studio. Disney was looking for an image of British purity that would fit its new big-budget live-action productions.
In 1959, she starred in Darby O'Gill and the Little People alongside a very young Sean Connery. The film performed well at the box office, and the American press began comparing her to the major young stars of the era. That same year, she filmed Third Man on the Mountain in the Swiss Alps.
The plan seemed perfect.
Her Disney era ended in 1960 with Swiss Family Robinson. The film became the biggest commercial hit of her career and grossed more than $40 million on its original release. Despite the numbers, she felt her career was stalling in one-note, innocent-girl roles.
Munro decided to break away from her childhood image and seek more dramatic projects in England. In 1961, she accepted a role in the science fiction film The Day the Earth Caught Fire. She played a government employee who leaked secrets to a journalist in a sweltering London.
But the reality was different.
In 1962, she earned her most important critical recognition with Victim. Her performance as a mother who refuses to let her daughter receive a blood transfusion for religious reasons earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. It was the peak of her acting career outside the Hollywood studio system.
Her personal life began to unravel after two failed marriages to actors Tony Wright and Ian Hendry. Heavy drinking started to affect her punctuality on set and her physical appearance. By the mid-1960s, film offers had dried up, and she had to fall back on one-off episodes of television series.
In 1968, she appeared in Sebastian, and in 1972 she filmed her final appearance on the series The Adam Strange Show. Her health was already badly deteriorated by a heart condition she had suffered from for a long time. The pace of work on British television sets ultimately drained her last strength.
She died on December 6, 1972 at Whittington Hospital in London after suffering acute myocarditis while having dinner. She was 38 years old, and her body was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium.
