Jessie T. Usher started working before he knew what a career was. By age five he was already filming commercials in Maryland, and by 2003 his family had decided Los Angeles was where he needed to be. He studied culinary arts in college, but acting came calling before he could hang up his apron.
In 2014, he landed the lead role in Survivor's Remorse. The series was produced by LeBron James, and Usher played a basketball prodigy struggling with sudden fame. The show ran for four seasons and gave him an inside look at how the industry works.
But the real test came in 2016.
Roland Emmerich was cast to headline Independence Day: Resurgence. He had the tough job of replacing Will Smith in a sequel fans had been waiting twenty years for. The film grossed 389 million dollars worldwide, but critics were harsh about the development of the characters.
Usher quickly learned that big budgets don't guarantee respect in the industry.
In 2019, he shared the screen with Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft. He played the son of the legendary detective in a film that tried to bridge old-school action with the mindset of Gen Z. Its domestic box office earnings stalled at $21 million against a $35 million budget.
Her luck changed thanks to streaming.
That same year he donned the A-Train suit in The Boys. The character is a speedster addicted to Compound V who accidentally kills a civilian in the first episode of the series. Usher chose to move away from hero clichés and build a man terrified of losing his status and relevance.
The Amazon Prime Video production gave him the stability that film had denied him. Filming the first seasons demanded strict physical training to mimic the physique of an elite athlete. The role required a mix of emotional fragility and physical violence that few actors his age could convey naturally.
In 2020 he shot Dangerous Lies for a digital platform. It was a simple thriller that performed well in streaming hours but did little for his reputation as an actor. Usher was still looking for a project that could succeed in traditional movie theaters without relying on an action franchise.
His big break came in 2022 with Smile.
Playing Trevor gave him a part in one of the biggest financial hits of horror cinema that decade. The film cost $17 million to make and wound up grossing more than $217 million at the box office for Paramount Pictures. That return outperforms almost any major superhero production he has been part of.
For the sequel Smile 2, shot in 2024, the studio decided to expand the marketing budget to capitalize on the first film's viral buzz. Usher kept his usual low profile away from the film sets and avoided the scandals that often derail careers in Hollywood.
The distribution deal for The Boys kept him on screen well into the 2020s. His pay per episode in the series' later seasons is estimated to have topped $150,000 per episode filmed. By the time production wrapped on season four, the actor had already racked up more than seventy credits in television and mainstream film.
