Before hanging from an ice wall on Annapurna, Jesús Calleja was cutting hair in a salon in León. He was no amateur with borrowed scissors. He won national styling competitions before turning twenty-three and used that money to fund his first independent expeditions to the Himalayan range.
He spent sixteen years leading expeditions in Nepal and Tibet. He learned to negotiate with porters, handle altitude sickness and speak the local dialect well enough to solve logistical problems at 5,000 meters. That terrain left no room for shortcuts.
Then he decided to slip a home camera into his backpack.
In the early 2000s, Spanish television treated mountaineering as a solemn subject reserved for documentaries with stern narration and static shots. Calleja filmed while out of breath, with a fogged-up lens, openly describing his fear. In 2006 he pitched a film to the newly launched channel Cuatro and convinced programmers to air something that broke with the style of Al filo de lo imposible.
The premiere of Desafío extremo in 2007 put on screen a presenter who didn't hide his blunders. It surpassed two million viewers in its most-watched broadcasts, thanks to a direct style and a fast-paced editing approach drawn from action filmmaking.
In 2009 he took the step that separates the adventurer from the audiovisual producer. Together with director María Ruiz Calzado, he founded Zanskar Producciones with the goal of controlling the project from the original idea to the final editing room, without middlemen.
That move gave him the editorial freedom to take on serious technical risks. In 2014 he transformed the pure expedition format with the launch of Planeta Calleja. The formula involved pulling public figures out of their comfort zones and forcing them to live in the middle of a jungle or on the edge of an active crater.
The public figure would disappear on the third day of the trek.
Prime ministers, cabinet ministers and elite athletes passed through the show, many ending up confessing personal secrets while eating plain white rice on a rock. The format worked because the host applied a blunt, almost impertinent curiosity that managed to sidestep the rehearsed speeches of press offices.
In 2015 the show shifted to domestic territory with Volando voy. He traded eight-thousand-meter peaks for the depopulated regions of the Iberian Peninsula and used a Robinson R44 light helicopter as a narrative device to give voice to anonymous local residents.
That project showed that human closeness and drone filming could hold massive Sunday audiences without slipping into easy sentimentality. Zanskar surpassed 10 million euros in annual revenue after diversifying its content and selling formats to regional broadcasters and pay-TV platforms.
In 2022 he signed a contract with Mediaset and Prime Video to travel to outer space aboard a New Shepard suborbital capsule from Blue Origin. The project required months of centrifuge training in the United States and special insurance policies for private spaceflight missions.
Between a forced helicopter landing in 2011 and a collarbone fracture in 2019 that halted filming for entire weeks, production costs have always been shaped by rescue protocols and technical risk bonuses.
