In August 1996, the Rossini Festival in Pesaro faced a critical cancellation. Principal tenor Bruce Ford fell ill just days before the premiere of Matilde di Shabran, and the organization desperately sought a replacement among the supporting cast. The chosen singer was a twenty-three-year-old Peruvian who learned the most demanding arias in a hotel room with a borrowed upright piano.
That night, Juan Diego Flórez sang as if stage fright did not exist. His pitch-perfect intonation and clean high notes left the audience in complete silence before the final burst of applause. The international press immediately recognized that the successor to Rossini's repertoire had just been born on an Italian stage.
Nobody expected such a knockout.
But the path to that stage was anything but aristocratic. Flórez grew up in Lima listening to Creole songs sung by his father and playing guitar in nightclubs, where he covered classic rock hits. That popular rhythmic foundation gave him an unusual technical agility for traditional opera, a precise pulse he later refined at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
In February 2007, the tenor broke a sacred rule that had remained intact since 1933. Conductor Arturo Toscanini had strictly banned encores at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan to avoid interrupting the musical drama. The Milanese audience, famous for being tough on opera singers, demanded a repeat of Tonio's aria in La fille du régiment by Donizetti.
Flórez accepted the challenge and went after the series of nine high Cs a second time with power identical to the first. The applause lasted more than ten uninterrupted minutes and broke the institutional taboo of the Italian opera temple. In 2008, he repeated the same feat at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where an encore had not been given in several decades.
And the Milanese coliseum surrendered.
As a result, major houses on the international circuit began staging productions designed around his agility in coloratura. Between 2000 and 2015, titles such as La Cenerentola, Il barbiere di Siviglia and I Puritani filled entire seasons in London, Paris, Vienna and Madrid.
Singing that repertoire demands ruthless muscular effort, and many lyric tenors lose their brilliance or agility after just a few years of nonstop touring. Flórez chose to focus on breath placement rather than forcing the volume of his instrument.
Over time, his voice developed darker overtones in the middle register without losing its security on the high notes. In 2016, he began a cautious shift toward the French romantic repertoire with more dramatically demanding roles, such as Massenet's Werther. Later, in 2024, he took on the lead role in Offenbach's Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Royal Opera House in London, earning excellent reviews from critics.
Away from the spotlight of the concert halls, Flórez spearheaded the founding of Sinfonía por el Perú in 2011. The initiative was inspired by the community orchestra model and aimed to provide free music education to children facing social vulnerability.
The project has transformed thousands of lives.
In January 2022, he took on the artistic directorship of the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the same festival that had witnessed his youthful debut twenty-six years earlier. In February 2023, the festival's board of directors extended his formal executive management term until 2026. His 2027 schedule was filled with productions of Roméo et Juliette in Zurich and Anna Bolena in Milan, adding up to a steady average of fifty performances a year in venues with demanding acoustics.
