Julia Cheng Yim-Lai signed her first contract with TVB in 1989, unaware that her face would become associated with the darkest corners of exploitation cinema. She debuted in the martial arts series The Sword and the Chessboard alongside a young Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and her sweet-girl image fit perfectly with the television aesthetics of the late decade.
That stage of innocence didn't last long. The entertainment industry in 1990s Hong Kong was a relentless machine that demanded fresh faces to feed a box office obsessed with eroticism and violence. In 1994, the actress made a decision that irreversibly shattered her public image.
And the audience responded with wild voyeurism.
She starred in Daughter of Darkness 2 and threw herself headfirst into Category III cinema, the most extreme rating in the local system. That move was not a pursuit of artistic prestige but a quick financial escape from the precarious pay in public television. But the stigma of on-screen nudity haunted her far beyond the film set.
In 1995, she shot The Eternal Evil of Asia, a film that mixed witchcraft with explicit scenes that ultimately typecast her for good. The press of the time stopped asking about her acting talent and focused instead on her private life and the multimillion-dollar contracts she supposedly signed for every nude scene.
The turn of the century was ruthless to stars of genre cinema. Julia tried to relaunch her career in Taiwan during the early years of the 2000s, but the interesting roles had dried up. The money she had built up vanished after several failed investments in restaurant and hospitality businesses that never took off.
In 2014, reality hit hard with a photo that made headlines across Asian tabloids. The former muse of erotic cinema was spotted working the night shift at a McDonald’s in Admiralty district. She earned minimum wage and cleaned tables and collected trays from late-night customers.
There was no drama in her statements to reporters.
She explained, with astonishing coolness, that she preferred the dignity of physical work over begging for supporting roles or relying on the charity of old acquaintances. That brutal honesty earned her a respect the industry had denied her for years. But her body began to pay the price for the stress and poor diet built up over time.
In 2020, she was rushed into the intensive care unit. Doctors diagnosed severe anorexia nervosa that had caused her potassium levels to drop to a critical level for her heart. The actress weighed less than 40 kilos when doctors managed to stabilize her after several weeks of clinical uncertainty.
She spent much of 2021 going in and out of hospitals while sharing her recovery on social media, unfiltered and without makeup. In 2022, she landed a steady administrative job at a logistics company and kept away from any event connected to show business.
Her last notable public appearance took place in 2023, when she clarified that her health remained fragile but that she had no intention of returning in front of a camera. In January 2024, medical reports confirmed that she remains under outpatient treatment to permanently control her electrolyte levels.
