At ten years old, Julianne Hough landed in London to learn to dance for real. She left behind the Mormon environment of Utah and threw herself into a military-style discipline at the Italia Conti Academy. There was no room for self-pity there, because the demands were suffocating.
Her brother Derek joined her during that artistic exile.
That British chapter forged a character that had little to do with the sweet image she later projected on American television. She learned Latin, ballroom and jazz while her parents divorced thousands of miles away. She returned to the United States at fifteen with a competitive mindset that bordered on obsessive.
In 2007, she joined Dancing with the Stars as a professional dancer. She won two consecutive seasons and became the youngest person to achieve that at the time. But dancing was only the first step in a much more ambitious structure that included music and big-budget films.
In 2008, she recorded a country album that went straight to number one on the specialty charts. She sold 67,000 copies in its first week, which gave her the confidence to leave the show that made her famous. She wanted to be an actress and wasn't going to settle for being the backup dancer for whatever celebrity was in the spotlight.
And the industry responded quickly.
In 2010, she landed a supporting role in Burlesque alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera. It wasn't a complex part, but it put her face in front of casting directors. That led to the chance to star in the remake of Footloose in 2011, where she had to deal with constant comparisons to the original film from the 1980s.
But the movie performed well at the box office, grossing $63 million worldwide. That financial result opened the doors to Rock of Ages in 2012, a big-budget musical in which she shared the marquee with Tom Cruise. The film was a resounding commercial flop that forced Hough to rethink her strategy on the big screen.
She turned to the romance drama Safe Haven in 2013. This Nicholas Sparks adaptation met its box office projections but typecast her in a type of movie that was starting to lose steam at the box office. So she decided to diversify her portfolio and build on her work as a businesswoman and judge on TV competition shows.
For years, she alternated smaller projects with her return to Dancing with the Stars, this time from the judges' table. In 2022, she made a bigger leap and made her Broadway debut in the political comedy POTUS. New York critics were surprisingly kind to her performance and praised her talent for physical comedic timing.
In 2023, she took on the role of main host of the show that launched her professional career. It was a full-circle move that guaranteed financial stability while she kept looking for character roles in independent film. Because Julianne Hough has never stopped managing her career like a high-performance business.
In 2025, she joined the cast of The Bride! under the direction of Maggie Gyllenhaal. Filming for this Warner Bros. production was scheduled with an initial budget of $20 million.
