Growing up in a home where the Oscars sit on the mantelpiece guarantees neither talent nor stability. Juliet Landau grew up watching her parents, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, dominate television in the sixties from the set of Mission: Impossible. But as a teenager, she preferred ballet shoes to scripts.
She was a professional dancer before ever stepping onto a set.
After years of discipline on stage, she decided film was a more flexible refuge. In 1990, she made her debut with a small role in Pump Up the Volume. It was the start of a slow transition in which her last name carried more weight than her résumé.
In 1994, Tim Burton cast her as Loretta King in Ed Wood. She didn't need many lines to stand out in a production that cost 18 million dollars and flopped at the box office despite excellent reviews. That shoot made her realize that auteur cinema was her natural home.
Joss Whedon was looking for something strange for the second season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997. Landau created Drusilla with a broken London accent and an unsettling fragility. The character was supposed to die within a few episodes, according to the writers' original plan.
She stayed three years longer than planned.
The audience reacted with physical intensity to her performance. That's how a supporting role grew until it led to the spin-off Angel in 2000. During that period, Landau learned to handle fame at fan conventions without letting typecasting derail her other artistic interests.
But mainstream TV success didn't pull her away from the independent circuit. She alternated vampire fangs with stage plays in Los Angeles and voice work for big-budget animated projects. In 2007, she voiced the Little Sisters in the video game BioShock.
In 2020, she released A Place Among the Dead. It's a project in which she acts, writes and directs to explore narcissism from an almost documentary perspective. For the cast, she brought together figures such as Gary Oldman and Ron Perlman to talk about the real monsters who don't wear makeup.
The money came out of its fans' pockets.
The film was funded through crowdfunding campaigns that exceeded their initial goals on digital platforms. Landau understood early on that the traditional industry rarely bets on psychological thrillers disguised as genre cinema.
In 2024, she focused on post-production for a documentary series about horror culture titled The Undead Series. The project features interviews with directors and actors who have explored the vampire myth over the past five decades.
Landau keeps her residence in California and runs her own independent production company. In 2025, her schedule included recording three audiobooks and creative consulting for a European streaming platform. The final cut of her latest documentary required 14 months of work in the editing room.
