Jung Chae-yeon had no intention of becoming the center of attention when she debuted in music in 2015. But television cameras have their own rules, and her face ended up being the main draw in an industry that chews through names at a frantic pace. Her time on the reality show Produce 101 in 2016 gave her the visibility she needed to jump into TV drama without going through the usual secondary training process.
In 2016, she played a student rival in Drinking Solo. It was a supporting role in which the script capitalized on her cool, distant image. That performance earned her the nickname "Goddess of Noryangjin" among local viewers for her ability to hold close-ups without blinking.
And it worked.
In 2018, she starred in To. Jenny, a two-episode miniseries where she blended her musical training with pure acting. It was an experiment by the broadcaster KBS2 that aimed for a tone closer to independent production. Here the industry understood that her screen presence did not depend only on her past in the group DIA but on an innate capacity for emotional restraint.
Filming in South Korea is often extremely demanding, and Jung Chae-yeon experienced this firsthand. While filming The Golden Spoon in 2022, she suffered a fall that resulted in a broken collarbone and a concussion. The accident forced the production to reorganize the shooting schedule while she underwent surgery for bone reconstruction.
Despite the physical pain, the actress returned to the set just a few weeks later to finish her scenes.
In 2021, she starred in The King's Affection, a period drama where costumes and protocol set the pace of the performances. Playing Noh Ha-kyung required a rigid physicality that set her apart from her earlier work in youth romantic comedies such as My First First Love from 2019. That Netflix project was what truly made her known outside the Asian market.
Her contract with the agency BH Entertainment in 2022 changed her work structure.
The project Family by Choice in 2024 marked a shift toward a more ensemble-driven story. In this production, she plays Yoon Ju-won, a character who anchors the relationship between three friends who grow up like siblings without sharing blood ties. The direction sought an actress who could convey maturity without losing the bright energy of youth.
The series is an adaptation of the Chinese drama Go Ahead.
Because Jung Chae-yeon's career is defined by choosing roles that avoid needless conflict. She prefers celebrities who observe before acting. This strategy has allowed her to work with directors who shy away from the over-the-top acting common in South Korean commercial television.
Filming for her most recent television project in 2024 took a total of six months of production across various locations in Gyeonggi Province.
