Choi Tae-joon debuted at age ten in the drama Piano. It was in 2001. He played the young version of Jo In-sung's character and disappeared from the media radar for nearly a decade. Many child actors burn out under the spotlight, but he chose to return to the classroom to complete his education in a conventional way.
He returned to the set in 2011 with Padam Padam. Director Kim Kyu-tae was looking for fresh faces who didn't carry the acting habits of commercial television. Tae-joon fit that profile. He played Jung Woo-sung's son and showed that his ten-year break had not dulled his ability to react on camera.
The Korean industry tends to typecast attractive faces in roles as eternal leading men.
But he explored other angles. In 2012, he appeared in The Great Seer, and a year later took on a lead role in Ugly Alert. This daily production of 133 episodes required him to film six days a week for months. That extreme work pace built his technical stamina before he turned twenty-five.
In 2017, he accepted the villain role in Missing 9. It was a risky choice. Most young actors in Seoul avoid antagonist roles for fear of losing advertising contracts. Tae-joon played a desperate killer stranded on a deserted island and won the award for Best Character Portrayal at that year's MBC Drama Awards.
And the gamble paid off.
His stint on the variety show Hello Counselor between 2016 and 2017 gave him a different kind of visibility. He wasn't just a scripted actor. He had to interact with real people and everyday problems. In 2018, he filmed the romantic comedy So I Married an Anti-fan, though its release was delayed three years due to global distribution issues.
Before beginning his mandatory military service in 2019, he completed his appearance in The Undateables. Due to prior health issues, he fulfilled his civil duty as a public service worker. He completed his service in May 2021 and resumed his career without losing the interest of international production companies.
His personal life changed the pace of his career in 2022. In January of that year, he married actress Park Shin-hye in a private ceremony in Seoul. In May 2022, their first child was born. This family pause did not stop his professional projects, but it does seem to have made his on-screen appearances more selective.
Television is still his natural habitat.
In 2022, he made a special appearance in the fantasy series Island. He needed only two episodes to make a real impact on the plot, playing a character with a tragic fate. In 2024, he joined the main cast of Iron Family alongside Kim Jung-hyun. It is a weekend drama on the KBS2 network with an expected 36 episodes.
The contract for this project was signed under strict confidentiality clauses regarding the development of the script. The production has a budget of 15,000 million won to cover filming costs on location outdoors.
