Kim Yeong-ok didn't start her career in front of the lights of a film set. In 1959, she joined the public broadcaster KBS as a radio host and voice actress. Those were years when television in South Korea barely existed as an industry, and the narrative weight rested on the airwaves.
She lent her voice to male cartoon characters and to lead characters in foreign series for almost two decades. That vocal training gave her perfect diction, which she still retains. But the microphone became too small for her when television drama began to demand faces with character.
She was the original voice of Mazinger Z in the Korean broadcast in the 1970s.
Toward the end of that decade, she made the leap to physical acting for good. She wasn't interested in romantic heroine roles, knowing her look suited hardworking, straight-talking women. In 1978, she appeared in the drama I Sell Happiness, laying the first stone of a filmography that now tops two hundred titles.
Unlike other actresses of her generation, she never tried to hide the passing of time. She specialized in playing mothers and grandmothers long before her actual age would have suggested it. In 1996, she worked on The Most Beautiful Goodbye and developed an acting style built on restraint and dry gestures.
And the gamble paid off.
Her acting steers clear of the cheap sentimentality that tends to surround older characters in Asian cinema. In 2011, she appeared in the film Sunny and proved she could handle sharp, acidic humor with the same precision as family drama. Her roles often feature women scolding their grandchildren while serving them a bowl of hot soup.
In 2015, the South Korean government awarded her the Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit Medal. This official recognition came after decades of uninterrupted work across the country's three major broadcasters. She is the active actress with the longest professional career in the Korean industry.
Her massive international recognition came at an age when most performers have disappeared from the credits. In 2021, she played the protagonist's mother in Squid Game, and her face became recognizable to millions of viewers outside her country. That same year, she starred in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, where she played the matriarch of a coastal town.
But her work pace did not slow down after her success on streaming platforms. In 2022, she joined the cast of The Speed of Going to You 493km, and in 2023 she appeared in the series King the Land. Her contracts usually do not include exclusivity clauses because she prefers to move from one project to the next without a break.
She has never had a manager who aggressively screens her scripts.
Despite her status, she prefers quick shoots and productions that don't drag on. In 2024, she lent her voice to the animated film Yumi’s Cells: The Movie, returning to her roots as a voice actress. The budget of her latest TV production in 2024 exceeded 15 billion won.
