Lee Jung-eun took its time. Her career began on stage in 1991, and for almost three decades her face existed only for regular audiences of small theaters in Seoul.
She took supporting roles in films without anyone remembering her name as they left the theater. But she kept going, racking up flight hours on stages where mistakes can't be edited out.
In 2000, she got her first real break in the film A Masterpiece in My Life. It was a brief role that didn't change her work pace or income, forcing her to juggle acting with other jobs outside the industry for years.
And the wait lasted almost three decades.
Before reaching the wider public, she worked as a stage directing assistant to understand the full machinery of a production. That technical perspective allowed her to approach her characters from their structure, not just from pure emotion.
Bong Joon-ho called her in 2017 for Okja because they needed someone to give voice to the creature at the center of the story. That purely vocal job was the prelude to what would happen two years later in a house designed by a fictional architect.
Her entrance in Parasite (2019), shot in the rain, changed global perceptions of her physical presence on screen. In that film, she made a service worker carry the weight of the decade's most important narrative twist without resorting to theatrics.
The international industry discovered her then. But in South Korea, people already knew that Lee could embody any working-class woman with a naturalness that is almost unsettling.
Won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2019.
Because Lee Jung-eun understands that realism doesn't need screaming.
The success of the Oscar-winning film gave her the chance to choose projects with greater dramatic weight and better pay. In 2022, she joined the series Our Blues, playing a fishmonger on Jeju Island who struggles with the harsh market and awkward reunions.
Her performance in Our Blues avoided melodrama. She aimed for restraint in an ensemble story that reached massive audience ratings on Korean cable television during its run.
In 2024, she took the risk of Miss Night and Day. In this production she plays a fifty-year-old woman caught in a generational duality, a role that demands absolute gestural precision to replicate the mannerisms of her younger co-star.
And the trick worked again.
Also in 2024, she worked on the suspense thriller The Frog for a global streaming platform. Filming of her most psychologically tense scenes was completed in less than three weeks of technical shooting schedule.
