Oh Eui-sik didn't pursue television cameras until he turned thirty-two. Before that, his natural habitat was the musical theater stage, where he made his debut in 2006 with the play Me and My Girl. For nearly a decade he worked in small and mid-sized productions in Seoul and built a technique that only comes from performing a few feet away from the audience's faces.
The industry took its time noticing him.
In 2015, he made the leap to television with a supporting role in Oh My Ghost. He wasn't the handsome lead or the menacing villain, but the kitchen buddy who provided a grounded counterpoint. His ability to stay out of the way of the frame while still driving the rhythm of a scene earned him non-stop work from that point on.
But his stage training continued to shape how he approached scripts. In theater there's no editing or cuts, so Oh Eui-sik developed muscle memory that lets him nail long takes without continuity errors.
In 2016, he took part in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, and that's where he began shaping the loyal-friend persona that casting directors have so often requested. Supporting actors often fall into caricature to stand out, but he prefers to work with restraint. His role in True Beauty in 2020 is an example of how he handles humor without losing the character's dignity.
Theater was his real school of survival.
The truth is, Oh Eui-sik belongs to that breed of performers who prefer to work on many different projects rather than wait for a leading role that may never come. In 2022, he joined the cast of Big Mouth, where he played a lawyer operating in a gray moral zone very far from his previous work.
In 2023, he took on one of his biggest technical challenges in the series Crash Course in Romance. He played Nam Jae-woo, a man with Asperger's syndrome. For this role, he chose to move away from the usual tics and focused on the character's obsession with data and routine. He delivered a clean performance that avoided the easy sentimentality that often surrounds such characters in Korean fiction.
That same year, he worked on The First Responders, where the physical demands were far greater due to the action and emergency scenes.
In 2024, he played Eom Soon-gu in the period series Knight Flower. Moving into historical drama calls for a command of language and body posture that Oh Eui-sik had already mastered thanks to his years in musical theater. Shortly after, he appeared in The Atypical Family, playing a man coping with the loss of supernatural powers in a dysfunctional family setting.
At the SBS Drama Awards in 2023, he received the award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the second season of The First Responders.
