Kwak Dong-yeon arrived in Seoul at age thirteen with little more than a guitar. His parents stayed behind in Daejeon, and he moved to the capital alone to train as a musician at an academy. He wasn't looking to act (he wanted to be a rock star), but the fate of casting calls tends to be unpredictable.
The original plan was rock.
In 2012, he landed the role of Bang Jang-goon in My Husband Got a Family. He won the Best New Actor award at the Korea Drama Awards, and the industry stopped seeing him as a would-be singer and started treating him as a real presence on camera. That debut drew ratings peaks close to 50% on Korean television.
For a long time, he carried the weight of always being the lead's loyal sidekick. In 2016, he played a swordsman in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and spent months learning Korean swordsmanship so his movements would look natural. His character was a silent shadow beside Park Bo-gum.
But the studio system tends to typecast people with soft features quickly. Kwak broke that pattern in 2021 with Vincenzo. His portrayal of Jang Han-seo (a puppet tormented by his own brother) forced casting directors to rethink how they saw his range. He made viewers empathize with a pathetic villain.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Queen of Tears to bring Hong Soo-cheol to life. The series reached a 24.9% audience share in its final episode on the tvN network. Kwak handled the shift from an immature man to a protective family man without slipping into the cheap sentimentality that often weighs down this kind of production.
Not all of his work has been TV drama. In 2022, he starred in Gaus Electronics, a pure office comedy where the pacing depended on his talent for physical absurdity. That same year, he appeared in Big Mouth in a brief but violent role that contrasted with his usual good-guy image.
Kwak often says he prefers characters with moral cracks. That's why he always returns to the stage. In 2020, he starred in the musical Something Rotten! as Nigel Bottom, and years earlier he had also tried his luck in the play The Elephant Song. The stage gives him a level of control that video editing sometimes takes away.
And he never fully let go of music.
On April 20, 2026, he signed an exclusive contract with the agency The Black Label to manage his career over the long term. That same year, he joined the reality show The Village Barber alongside Park Bo-gum. Filming of his scenes for the big screen in Love in the Big City wrapped up at the end of 2024, directed by E.oni.
