Park Se-wan made her public debut in 2016 with The Red Teacher. There were no fireworks or massive marketing campaign behind her name. That debut on KBS2 helped casting directors take note of a profile that combined an unusual naturalness with a sharp, watchful gaze.
In 2017, she appeared in School 2017. She played Oh Sa-rang and showed she could keep up the pace of a youth drama without falling into the genre's usual clichés. But her work in I’m Not a Robot during that same period revealed her talent for physical comedy.
The Korean industry began to take notice.
Before turning twenty-five, she had already taken on five big-budget television projects. In 2018, she starred in Just Dance, and the challenge was enormous. The series demanded a high level of physical commitment because she played a high school student in an industrial area who finds a way out through ballroom dancing.
She spent months rehearsing choreography to bring Kim Shi-eun to life. She won Best New Actress at the KBS Drama Awards that year. That statuette was not a gift from the network but a recognition of a demanding technical effort that few of her generation were willing to take on.
In 2022, 6/45 was released. This war comedy about a lottery ticket that crosses the border between the two Koreas earned her the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2023. She made a North Korean soldier feel human and funny without relying on the political caricature that usually weighs down these productions.
And the gamble paid off.
For the musical film Life is Beautiful in 2022, she had to sing and dance all over again. The shoot was complicated and was postponed by the global health crisis, but it ultimately grossed more than $8 million at the box office. Park played the young version of the lead character and kept the dramatic intensity of a story about grief and memory.
The road to applause was not a straight one. Between 2019 and 2020, she led the cast of Never Twice across seventy-two recorded episodes. It was an exhausting job that tested her physical stamina on set. Still, that experience in long-running dramas gave her a discipline she would bring to her later contracts with streaming platforms.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Doona! for Netflix. Her character served as a necessary counterpoint in a bittersweet teen romance plot. She accepted the role because it allowed her to explore a darker, more cynical register than the one she had known from her early days on public television.
Risk always comes at a price.
A year later, in 2024, she starred in Victory. It is the first Korean film about cheerleaders set in the late 90s on Geoje Island. Park plays Mi-na, and for this role she had to learn the local dialect with absolute precision so as not to disconnect Korean audiences.
The film required its main cast to train in hip-hop and pom-pom dance routines for three months before principal photography began. Park Se-wan finished filming with a minor ankle injury, and the film's box office exceeded expectations in its first week in theaters.
