Kang Ki-young didn't start out in front of a film camera. His training was forged on the theater stage starting in 2009 with the play Our Bad Magnet. For five years, he worked on small circuits and in commercials, with the TV drama industry paying him little attention.
In 2014, he landed a small role in King of High School Savvy, and that's when his name started to get noticed in Seoul casting offices. Directors were looking for someone with a natural comedic rhythm who didn't need to overdo every gesture to be funny.
And the gamble paid off.
His talent for delivering rapid-fire lines kept him busy. Between 2015 and 2018, he took on one project after another, including Oh My Ghost and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo. He was always the funny friend or uncle who supported the handsome leads on the poster.
But audiences really started to notice him with What's Wrong with Secretary Kim in 2018. His portrayal of Park Yoo-sik constantly counterbalanced the self-absorption of the title character. He made a supporting role carry as much weight as the main stars' roles in the eyes of viewers.
Many actors get stuck in comic relief forever. Kang Ki-young avoided that fate when he accepted the role of Jung Myeong-seok in Extraordinary Attorney Woo in 2022. He played a serious, professional mentor lawyer, moving away from his usual goofy expressions.
The series reached a 17.5% audience share in South Korea, a massive figure for a cable channel. The actor proved he could sustain the dramatic tension of a scene without resorting to the easy joke.
That role changed how producers saw him.
In 2023, he appeared in the action film The Point Men alongside Hyun Bin. He played an interpreter caught in a hostage crisis in Afghanistan. Filming in Jordan was demanding and required more physical effort than anything he had done up to that point.
In 2024, he took on his first leading role on television with Queen of Divorce. He shared the poster with Lee Ji-ah and fully moved away from traditional supporting roles to carry the narrative weight of the legal plot.
His film career has also gained momentum recently. In 2023, he shot 3 Days of Vacation, a fantasy drama about grief and family that demanded absolute emotional restraint.
Because the Korean market now demands performers who can handle pure drama without losing their charm.
Kang Ki-young signed an exclusive contract with the agency Namoo Actors in 2020. In 2024, his fee per episode in national television productions placed him among the highest levels for actors who started out in independent theater. The film The Point Men wrapped its theatrical run with box office earnings over $13 million.
