Bong Joon-ho studied sociology at Yonsei University in the late 1980s. Those years of student protests and police repression in Seoul shaped his outlook long before he stepped onto a film set. He was less interested in pure aesthetics than in understanding how power structures work.
His feature film debut came in 2000 with Barking Dogs Never Bite. It was a resounding box office flop in South Korean theaters. The story of a scholar who kidnaps dogs didn't connect with mass audiences, but it already showed the dry black humor that defines his work.
No one saw what would happen three years later.
In 2003, he premiered Memories of Murder and changed the perception of the thriller in Asia. Based on real crimes, the film refused to offer the cathartic closure the genre usually demands. Because the killer remained free while the movie was playing in theaters.
With The Host in 2006, the director used a giant monster to launch a fierce critique of bureaucracy and foreign military presence. The film sold more than 13 million tickets in South Korea. But his real international breakthrough came with Snowpiercer in 2013.
During the post-production of that film, he had a direct confrontation with Harvey Weinstein. The producer wanted to cut twenty minutes of footage to tighten the pacing. Bong Joon-ho brazenly claimed that a particular fishing scene was a personal tribute to his father (who was never a fisherman) to avoid the cut.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, he shot Okja for a streaming platform. This decision sparked intense debate at the Cannes Film Festival about the legitimacy of films that skip traditional theaters. But the director has always prioritized creative freedom over the exhibition format.
His technical peak came in 2019 with Parasite. The film won the Palme d'Or, and in 2020 it took home four Oscars. It was the first time a non-English-language film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its global box office topped $258 million on a budget of just $11 million.
For his big 2025 project titled Mickey 17, the budget climbed to 150 million dollars. Robert Pattinson leads the cast of this science fiction story based on a novel by Edward Ashton. Filming took place mainly at Warner Bros. studios in the United Kingdom.
Bong Joon-ho personally draws every shot of his films in extremely precise storyboards before filming begins. This method eliminates the need to shoot coverage and keeps leftover footage to under 10% of the total filmed on set.
