The Critic Who Couldn't Pay the Rent

Park Chan-wook decided he wanted to make movies after watching Hitchcock's Vertigo in a movie theater in Seoul. It wasn't an intellectual crush but a physical obsession with the composition of the frame. But the road to international recognition was full of debts and fierce criticism.

His debut in 1992 with The Moon Is… the Sun’s Dream was a resounding flop. Five years later he tried again with S Trio, and the result was just as bad. Park had to make a living writing about other people's work while waiting for a break that never came.

In 2000, they shot JSA (Joint Security Area). That story about the border between the two Koreas broke box office records and allowed producers to trust their darker vision. Before becoming the architect of Korean violence, they were a person who didn't know how to pay the rent.

Box office finally proved them right.

The Choreography of Blood

In 2002, they began their most acclaimed period with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. But it was Oldboy in 2003 that shook the foundations of European cinema after winning the Grand Prix at Cannes. Quentin Tarantino presided over the jury, and his enthusiasm for the film was total.

Park uses violence as an aesthetic tool rather than an end in itself. On his sets, production design is just as important as the script. Every wallpaper pattern and camera angle is calculated down to the millimeter to suffocate the viewer.

The revenge trilogy ended in 2005 with Lady Vengeance. This time the director swapped testosterone for a baroque aesthetic and a female lead who sought redemption through the suffering of others. For Park, justice is always a private and dirty affair.

Style always comes before morality.

The Precision of International Detail

In 2013, they shot Stoker in the United States. It was an exercise in style where the camera moved with surgical precision. But Park preferred to regain the total control that the Korean film industry offered and returned to Seoul to film The Handmaiden in 2016. It grossed more than $38 million worldwide with a period story loaded with eroticism and deception.

With Decision to Leave in 2022, the director left explicit blood behind to focus on desire and loss. They won the Best Director award at Cannes. The film proved that their cinema didn't need hammers or physical violence to maintain narrative tension for two hours.

In 2024, they directed and produced the series The Sympathizer for the HBO network. Filming took place mainly in Thailand and Los Angeles, with a budget that exceeded $100 million. The production featured Robert Downey Jr. playing four different characters within a highly complex technical structure.
