In 1988, Oh Dae-su is an insufferable, unpleasant businessman who is arrested for drunkenness. On the night of his arrest, he misses his daughter's fourth birthday. Joo-hwan, his friend since school, goes to the police station to pick him up, but Dae-su disappears shortly after. He wakes up locked in a sealed hotel room, where a television is his only window to the outside world. Every day, Chinese takeout is delivered through a pet door, and no one gives him any explanation. Dae-su wants to understand who is holding him and why, but every hour that passes deepens his despair. The film focuses on this confinement and on the search for answers he cannot find on his own.

When the melody turns on, gas comes out. When the gas comes out, I fall asleep. I found out later it's the same Valium gas the Russians used on those Chechen terrorists.
Remember this: "Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same."
[To a mob of thugs in hallway] Anyone here with an AB blood type, raise your hand. [Three thugs raise their hands]
What I am isn't important. Why is important.
As I expected, I can't get along with anyone today either.
You really are the very monster I created, aren't you? But you won't find out the "why" of this if you kill me. Fifteen years of being curious would go to waste.
