Han Ji-min debuted in 2003 playing the teenage version of Song Hye-kyo in the drama All In. It's a curious coincidence, since both actresses were born in 1982 and are only a few months apart in age. But casting directors saw in Han a clean, innocent look that fit the childhood of the main character.

That first role defined a stage of sweet, supporting characters that lasted nearly five years. Korean audiences quickly typecast her in roles as a long-suffering heroine or a love interest with few rough edges. In 2007 she landed Yi San, and the massive success on television changed the rules of the game for her.

And the industry took notice.

The Physical Risk of Breaking the Mold

For years, her public image was tied to polish and classic elegance. That's why the premiere of Miss Baek in 2018 came as a head-on shock to specialist critics. For this role, Han Ji-min stopped washing her face and let the makeup emphasize her wrinkles and skin blemishes.

The film tells the story of a former convict who tries to save a girl from family abuse. Han Ji-min smoked real cigarettes during filming to give her voice a raspy, harsh quality. She won the Best Actress award at that year's Blue Dragon Awards after a deliberation that was shorter than usual.

The public accepted the actress's new look.

In 2019 she starred in One Spring Night opposite Jung Hae-in. It was a project that avoided exaggerated dramatic twists to focus on the quiet bureaucracy of everyday emotions. The script called for long silences that Han Ji-min held with a naturalness rare in commercial television.

The Move to Ensemble Stories

Han Ji-min's professional maturity shows in her ability to share the screen without needing to be the absolute center of the frame. In 2022 she appeared in Our Blues, playing a haenyeo diver on Jeju Island with a complicated family secret. She spent weeks training with real haenyeo to learn to hold her breath underwater.

Before filming the underwater diving scenes, she needed to understand the real physical exhaustion these women endured. The result was a restrained performance that avoided easy sentimentality despite the harshness of the script. As a result, her name became synonymous with reliability for Seoul's major production companies.

In 2023, she switched gears with Behind Your Touch. Here she explored physical comedy and absurdity through a character with psychometric powers that activated when touching animals' rear ends. The series drew steady audiences on Korean cable television, reaching a 9% audience share in its final episode.

In 2025, Acquaintances is scheduled for release, directed by Ham Jun-ho. It is a Studio Dragon production that explores the relationship between a chief executive and her personal secretary. The production contract sets a six-month shooting schedule, with mostly urban locations in Seoul.
