Lee Sang-hee did not follow the usual path of Korean stars shaped by talent agencies from adolescence. Her first role came in 2010 with the short film Eyes Wide, when she was already 27 years old. In an industry that devours new faces at a frantic pace, that age is often an insurmountable barrier to getting started. But she chose the independent circuit to learn the craft away from media spotlight.
There were no shortcuts.
For five years, she took on small projects where the budget barely covered transportation. In 2014, she appeared in Man on High Heels, and two years later she shot Our Love Story. This film changed the course of her career. She played Yoon-ju, an art student who discovers her sexuality with a naturalness that made Seoul's most conservative circles uncomfortable. She won the Best New Actress Award at the 2017 Baeksang Arts Awards for this role.
That recognition came when many of her peers were already thinking about retiring. But her technique was based on observation rather than histrionics. That restraint allowed her to move into commercial cinema without losing the credibility that low-budget productions give an actor.
Her move into mainstream television happened in stages. In 2019, she appeared in One Spring Night as the level-headed friend of the lead. But her face became global in 2022 thanks to the zombie series All of Us Are Dead. There she played Park Sun-hwa, the teacher trying to keep her composure in the middle of a school massacre. Her character served as an emotional anchor amid the teens' adrenaline.
Audiences began to recognize her gaze before her name.
In the same 2022, she took on a complex role in Juvenile Justice. She worked alongside Kim Hye-soo, playing a judge with a far more empathetic approach toward young offenders. The series worked because the script allowed Lee Sang-hee to use long silences to question the legal system. Because she knows that on screen, a tense back can sometimes say more than a three-page monologue.
Her presence on streaming platforms was solidified with characters who turn away from glamour. In 2023, she joined the cast of Daily Dose of Sunshine, which tackles mental health from a hospital perspective. The actress often chooses socially charged projects where the conflict is not romance but daily survival or the weight of Korean family structures.
In 2024, she appeared in the film My Name is Loh Kiwan opposite Song Joong-ki. She plays Sun-ju, a Korean woman living in Belgium who works at a meat processing plant. It is a supporting role, but a crucial one for sustaining the film's atmosphere of desolation. Production was filmed mainly on location in Hungary to simulate the gray Belgian winter landscapes.
And the gamble paid off.
Lee Sang-hee has more than 50 credits across film and television since her late debut. She has no exclusive contracts with luxury cosmetics brands and doesn't actively pursue fashion magazine covers. On the set of My Name is Loh Kiwan, the actress had to learn technical dialogue about animal butchering to lend authenticity to her character's work environment. The film's final cut devoted 131 minutes to the story of a North Korean defector seeking asylum.
