Park Sung-woong studied law at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies because his family insisted. His father wanted a lawyer in the house, but he preferred the risk of the stage. In 1997, he made his debut with a tiny role in the film No. 3, and that started a decade-long road in the shadows.
He spent ten years as an anonymous face in the Korean film industry. He worked in extra roles or as characters with barely two lines of dialogue. Casting directors didn't know where to place his nearly 1.9-meter (6'3") height and that gaze that always seemed on the verge of a threat.
Patience was his greatest acting skill.
During that dry spell, he honed his craft in theater and minor TV productions. But he never stopped going to auditions with the same intensity. In 2007, he shot the fantasy series The Legend and met actress Shin Eun-jung there. They married a year later in a ceremony that drew the attention of the local media.
In 2013, he got the opportunity of a lifetime with New World. He played Lee Joong-gu, an ambitious gangster competing for control of a crime syndicate. That film changed his professional status for good and pulled him out of the pile of eternal supporting actors.
His physical presence on screen became his greatest asset. He made a despicable character magnetic to audiences through absolute restraint in his gestures. From then on, action scripts began piling up on his desk.
Nobody handed him anything.
In 2015, he appeared in The Shameless and proved he could handle more dramatic and darker roles. But he didn't want to be typecast as the tough guy. So in 2019, he tried his luck in comedy with The Dude in Me, playing a mob boss who swaps bodies with a high school student.
In 2023, his career was in full swing with the premiere of the series Bloodhounds on Netflix. He played Kim Myeong-gil, a ruthless moneylender with a scar running across his face. The series hit No. 1 in several countries during its first weeks on air.
That same year, the films The Wild and A Man of Reason were released in theaters. In the latter, he worked under the direction of Jung Woo-sung in a story about redemption and inherited violence. Park Sung-woong has specialized in characters who operate on the fringes of the law but with impeccable technical dignity.
And the pace of work did not slow down in the months that followed.
In 2024, he shot the film Desperate Pursuit, playing a con artist who must work with the police. On the 2025 schedule, the actor is confirmed for the action comedy Officers of the Year. The production has an estimated budget of 10 billion won to ensure the risky outdoor stunts.
