Kim Nam-gil started his career under the stage name Lee Han. He believed his real name was too common to stand out in the Korean industry and that a more striking identity would open doors for him. In 2003, he joined MBC after passing a grueling audition process, but a car accident nearly ended everything before it began. He spent months in the hospital with serious injuries that delayed his real screen debut.
In 2008, he decided to reclaim his birth name.
It was direct advice from director Kang Woo-suk during the filming of Public Enemy Returns. That change of identity coincided with a shift in his acting style, as he stopped chasing aesthetic approval and focused on the physical weight of his characters. In 2009, he played Bidam in the historical drama Queen Seondeok, and national viewership soared above 40% thanks to his appearance. That supporting role ended up overshadowing the leads thanks to its mix of violence and vulnerability.
Success caught him by surprise.
But fame in South Korea is a double-edged sword that demands total commitment. Just when he was at the peak of his popularity, he had to fulfill his mandatory military service in 2010. He spent two years working as a civil servant in a Gangnam district office while his peers from his generation kept filming. Many thought his moment in the spotlight would fade quickly, but he used that time to study the industry from the outside.
After returning from his military obligations in 2012, he didn't go for the easy role of romantic leading man. He took on complex projects such as Shark in 2013 and the action film The Pirates in 2014, which grossed more than 64 million dollars at the box office. His ability to move from physical comedy to darker drama allowed him to work with directors who wanted faces with nuance. In 2015, he filmed The Shameless and took part in the Cannes Film Festival, proving his name already carried weight in auteur circles.
And the gamble paid off.
Don't look to him for the pose of an untouchable star, because Nam-gil tends to choose characters who suffer or who are on the verge of mental collapse. In 2017, he starred in Memoir of a Murderer, where he had to gain weight and change his facial expressions to play a detective with murderous instincts. Critics noted that his on-screen presence could sustain tension without the need for extended dialogue. It confirmed that his craft went far beyond commercial television.
In 2019, the project that cemented his status in the television industry arrived. In The Fiery Priest, he broke the mold of the traditional hero by playing a priest struggling with anger management issues. The series was a social phenomenon in Korea and earned him the Daesang at the SBS Drama Awards. That year, his pay per episode rose to levels only a handful of actors in the country ever reach.
Kim Nam-gil founded Gilstory ENT in 2021 to manage his own career and support new talent. He didn't want to depend on the decisions of big agencies that put advertising deals ahead of script quality. In 2022, he starred in Through the Darkness, playing South Korea's first criminal profiler in a bleak, psychological shoot. The series avoided sensationalism to focus on the emotional exhaustion of someone who hunts monsters.
Physical demands remain a constant in his contracts.
In 2023, he filmed the historical action series Song of the Bandits for Netflix, with a lineup of stunt performers and firearms that was unusual for Korean television. He shot most of his action scenes without using stunt doubles to keep the visual continuity of long sequences. But his true obsession remains technical detail and thorough preparation of scripts before stepping onto the set.
In 2024, he reprised his role as the priest in the second season of The Fiery Priest, after fans had waited five years. For 2025, the series Trigger is scheduled to premiere on Netflix, with an estimated budget of 30,000 million won from the production company. It is an action thriller centered on the use of firearms in a society where they are banned by law.
