Lee Ha-nee is more than a face that passed through the beauty pageant circuit. Before winning Miss Korea in 2006, she had already mastered the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither that demands near-military discipline. She studied at Seoul National University, and that academic background often carries weight in the Korean industry. There, pedigree often dictates the respect you receive on set.
That musical training gave her an inner rhythm that she later brought to physical comedy. But her first years in acting were plagued by prejudice. Directors saw her only as the fourth runner-up at Miss Universe 2007. They offered her femme fatale or distant heiress roles that didn't require much acting effort.
There was no turning back.
In 2009, she made her debut in the legal drama Partner, and critics were harsh about her work. According to local media at the time, she lacked naturalness. But she chose to ignore the noise and turned to musical theater to refine her vocal technique and stage presence. She took part in productions of Legally Blonde, where she began to shed the stiffness she had carried over from the runway.
The real change of direction came when she decided to laugh at her own image. In 2019, she accepted the role of Detective Jang in the film Extreme Job. She appeared on screen with barely any makeup, hair messy and swearing in every action scene. It was a risk, because Korean audiences are extremely demanding about the looks of their leading actresses.
Box office proved her right.
The film sold more than 16 million tickets and became one of the biggest hits in South Korean film history. That same year, she also starred in the series The Fiery Priest, playing a corrupt prosecutor who ends up seeking redemption. From then on, her name stopped being associated with beauty pageants and became directly linked to commercial success.
In 2021, she took on a double challenge in One the Woman, playing two characters who look identical but have opposite personalities. One was a tough prosecutor, and the other was a daughter-in-law from a multimillionaire family who suffered abuse. The shoot demanded constant tonal shifts within a single workday. The series reached audience peaks of 17.8% in its home country.
Because Lee knows her looks are a tool but not her only asset. In 2023, she shot Phantom, a espionage thriller set during the Japanese occupation. There she proved she could carry the weight of a dark dramatic plot without relying on the humor that had made her famous years earlier.
In 2024, she returned to television with Knight Flower, playing a widow who leads a double life as a vigilante at night. The production was filmed under strict safety measures to protect the sword-fighting action scenes. The series finale drew a 18.4% audience share on MBC.
