Cha Tae-hyun doesn't have the look of a conventional movie star. In 1995, he won a KBS talent contest and for years he worked the rounds of TV studios, searching for a break that never quite came. But his luck changed when a director decided that his boy-next-door look was exactly what Korean comedy needed.
In 2001, My Sassy Girl was released. The film raked in astronomical box office numbers across Asia and made him a social phenomenon without relying on the imposing physique of other actors of his generation. His role as Gyeon-woo resonated because it portrayed the ordinary, clumsy and sentimental man who endured the abuse of an unpredictable girlfriend.
It was a triumph of the ordinary.
That year his fame was so great that he even ventured into the music world. His album T-Hyo sold more than 200,000 copies in a market that was already starting to feel the crisis of physical formats. But he knew his place was in front of the film cameras, not on pop stages.
After a few box office disappointments in the mid-2000s, the actor found a space on the small screen to reinvent himself. In 2008, he starred in Scandal Makers. The film drew more than 8 million moviegoers to theaters in South Korea and returned him to the forefront of the industry.
His time on the variety show 2 Days & 1 Night in 2012 gave him a down-to-earth warmth that few top-tier actors dare to cultivate. There was no script and no makeup there. Viewers watched him go hungry, cold and sleepy in the most remote corners of the country.
And the gamble paid off.
That constant exposure did not damage his film career. On the contrary, it allowed him to choose projects with more freedom. In 2010, he starred in Hello Ghost, a dramatic comedy that ended up being one of the most profitable films of that fiscal year thanks to a script that blended absurd humor with a devastating ending.
In 2017, he joined the cast of Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds. This production had a budget of 35 million euros and relied entirely on digital effects to recreate the Korean underworld. His portrayal of a firefighter who dies and must get through seven spiritual trials was the emotional core of the story.
The film surpassed 14 million ticket sales. As a result, the actor confirmed that his name remained a safe bet for investors in Seoul. But Cha Tae-hyun has always preferred shoots where the human factor outweighs the green screen.
In 2023, he appeared in the series Moving for Disney+. He played a bus driver with the ability to generate electricity. The series became the most-watched Korean original production on the service and required a team of 60 visual effects studios spread across the world.
Filming his action scenes took several months.
In 2024, he got involved in the show Apartment 404 alongside other celebrities from the country. The format played with nostalgia and mystery in real buildings in the capital. The production confirmed that the set design cost for each episode exceeded 200,000 euros due to the exact recreation of past eras.
