Lee Kyung-young is the performer who has died and come back to life on South Korean screens the most times. In 2023, he appeared in so many productions that the Seoul press joked that domestic cinema couldn't be shot without his permission. He's a man who needs no introduction, because his face is burned into the memory of every K-drama viewer.
In 1987, he made his debut in a minor role in Adada, and from that moment on, his work pace has been frenetic. During the 1990s, he won awards at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Baeksang Arts Awards for films such as Death Song. He was the intellectual leading man the industry needed to add depth to scripts that aimed for more than action.
The golden supporting actor who never rests.
But his career ran into a legal wall that nearly ended his public life. In 2002, a scandal involving the prostitution of a minor led to a court case and cost him a ban from the country's major television networks. For almost ten years, his name was synonymous with persona non grata in the offices of the most influential producers.
His professional redemption came thanks to independent film and directors who valued his dramatic ability over his legal past. In 2011, he returned with Sunny, and a year later he took part in National Security. It was a calculated comeback in which he accepted roles as a mature, serious man, often with rather questionable morals.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, he took part in Inside Men, playing a corrupt politician that perfectly defined the new niche he was going to exploit. From that point on, he specialized in characters who pull the strings from the shadows of large conglomerates or the government. His deep voice and icy stare became working tools that casting directors sought to add weight to suspense plots.
In 2017, he filmed Steel Rain, and in 2019, he joined the cast of Vagabond. He didn't mind if the role was brief, because his presence helped validate the production's quality for veteran audiences. In South Korea, his face is a stamp of technical realism that few actors of his generation manage to maintain.
Lee Kyung-young's workload has not slowed down over the decades. In 2020, he played the powerful father-in-law in the drama The World of the Married, earning historic ratings for cable television. That role of a patriarch betrayed by his own ambition returned him to the forefront of international media attention thanks to streaming platforms.
But the actor did not stop there.
In 2023, he joined the cast of Queenmaker for Netflix, playing an unscrupulous political consultant. That same year, he also appeared in Dr. Romantic 3, maintaining his status as an ubiquitous actor. He can shoot three series and two movies simultaneously without his performance suffering from the lack of rest between sets.
In 2024, his participation in the suspense series The 8 Show was confirmed, where he plays one of the contestants trapped in a psychological game. Now in his sixties, he keeps a schedule that would exhaust any actor just starting out in the business. He has appeared in more than 120 movies since he began his career in the 1980s.
His accumulated filmography exceeds 160 official credits across film and television. In 1996, he tried to make the leap to directing with the movie The Gate of Destiny, but the box office result was a total disaster that forced him to focus exclusively on acting. Today, his salary per episode in large-scale productions remains among the highest for supporting actors in Asia.
